Error 120 when trying to load Carrier's default ROMS

I recently started using my Sprint Apache again, and decided to see what upgrades were available.

I started by upgrading from the stock ROMS my phone came with(early '06) to the APA_SPCS_20600_303_12700_WWE_Ship.exe downloaded from Sprint's website. This completed OK with no errors.

I wanted to try one of the custom ROMs, and picked Kirvin's Clean 3.5 for Sprint - this also went OK, with no errors.

Using the phone after that, it seemed to have issues connecting to the internet, so I tried to reflash the Sprint APA_SPCS_20600_303_12700_WWE_Ship.exe again. Got an error during the radio ROM section, and was stuck in bootloader.

Various sites advised using the UNI_ExitBootloader.exe tool to reset that, and it worked, but now it shows NONE for radio ROM.

Redownloaded and Tried to reflash the Sprint APA_SPCS_20600_303_12700_WWE_Ship.exe again, received error code 120. Tried extracting the file and just flashing nk.nbf or ms_.nbf without the radio portion, still gets error 120. I've tried using the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe as well, but it doesn't really skip the ID check for apache, according to stuff I've seen posted on other sites by folks like luv2chill.

All the posts I've seen for people with radio ROM problems seem to lead to them having to get service performed on the phone - I'm fine with that, but I'd like to get the stock ROMs back on it before I take it in. Even if the rep who works on it doesn't notice that the UI looks a bit different, the custom boot screen with PPCGeeks dot com and people's forum nicks plastered all over it is kind of a dead giveaway.

Any advice for getting the stock nk.nbf back on the phone, at least?

maybe you can get away with using something like pdocwrite
http://www.ppcgeeks.com/splash-scree...pdocwrite.html to change the boot screen? I'd ues some regedit to change the os buld number back to 2.2, and if they ask about the UI looking funny, tell em it was a theme you d/led.

If you cannot get it working, try stopping by the Chat room (click up to). usually someone is around that may be able to help you.

try adding this line into your RUU.CONF file before you run the update.

'[CHECKCEID_TYPE]=1' (without the quotes).

i would still recommend using the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe also.

lattisimo, that worked perfectly. Not only did it allow the original CE and Ext ROMs, but it actually took the Radio ROM as well. My phone is un-bricked and can make calls again! Note: I did have to use UNI_ExitBootloader.exe to get out of bootloader mode when it finished.

Details on exactly what my setup was when I managed it successfully:
Redownloaded APA_SPCS_20600_303_12700_WWE_Ship, extracted, changed ruu.conf to add the [CHECKCEID_TYPE]=1 line at the end.

Using Windows XP Pro SP2, ActiveSync 4.2, a fresh hard reset on the Apache, then a fresh soft reset, then setup and sync with ActiveSync.

Ran MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe for the actual update. Update completed with no errors on any of the three ROMs, phone stuck in bootloader though. Used UNI_ExitBootloader.exe to get it to restart normally. Hard Reset to reinstall the stock CE ROM.

computercarl: Thanks for the advice, I tried that before the reflash, and it did work pretty well as far as making the 3.5 look 'stock'.
