Stable Today Screen Weather Program?

Is there such a thing?

I am running BigJ's most current ROM and I have tried Weather Panel and SBSH's PocketWeather.

With both of these plugins, I have had nothing but issues. Constant lockups. I was needing to reset my phone just about every time I wanted to make a call or even pull up more info on the weather.

I like the additional info that is available with these programs, like radar or satellite imagery. Is there anything that can be done or are there any Today screen weather plugins that have this additional info and actually work with AKU 3.5?

Thanks,

spb weather seemed pretty good to me when i had it... i just never got around to putting it back on again... but thats my .02

luv2chill 04-16-2007 04:26 PM

Have you confirmed that your freeze-up issues aren't due to something else? I have tried both of those apps and neither one ever caused my phone to freeze. Weather apps can be memory hogs though, so if you have a lot of other stuff running you could have problems.

johnlc19 04-16-2007 04:29 PM

Personally, I like Marsware weather panel.
I have never had any problems.

jerkyjones 04-16-2007 04:50 PM

As soon as both of these programs were removed from my Today screen, I stop having issues. The phone behaves normally and I've had to reset maybe twice in the last 72 hours versus something like twice an hour before.

Another vote here for WeatherPanel. I've been running it for a couple of years and have ZERO problems. It does run best from internal storage, rather than the storage card, though.

Love weather panel....

BUT..it can in fact cause serious problems. Try changing the settings around such as when to autoconnect - or turn off autoconnect entirely.

ADBWeather Plus v3.1
It's free, also does the animated maps (they can store on your card too!).

I don't have the unlimited data so I have it set so I update it on demand. I have had NO problems on any of the many roms I've tried.

OOPS! :( Not free, this from them:

ADBWeather Plus is a timed shareware. It is fully functional for 15 days. After that, it will not display forecast information until registered.

- Please visit Handango or PocketGear to purchase ADBWeather Plus.
- After purchasing ADBWeather Plus you will need to register online at http://www.happyjackroad.net. You will need to have available the Install Code and a Registration Email Address. After you register online, a Registration Key will be emailed to you. Please wait 24hrs after purchasing, before registering online.

well that's weird I have installed this several times on different roms and different phones, including different versions and have never had any nag or anything, and I swear where I got it from at first was a freeware sight. But I digress...

ecamacho 04-17-2007 11:31 AM

I also use Spb Weather and it works great. It doesn't do any of the animated stuff, but it has all the info you'll need. Are you installing these programs to main memory?

Big D5 04-17-2007 12:29 PM

Off topic rant: nuguy love that signature man, also brings to mind one of the best commercials of all time. Go ahead try to take my wallet

Raging Idiot 04-17-2007 02:21 PM

On the topic of the "off topic rant"... It was advertised during the 2006 super bowl. Apparently sprint phones can be used as projectiles to deter would be assailants. It is just one of many exclusive features in sprints power vision package. They said email, live TV, and crime deterrent.

Interesting that the Sprint live TV function was in fact not working on this phone. I originally had many problems with my email (no push), and not sure I've met anyone that has used it as a crime deterrent. Actually, I'd throw my wallet at them before my phone... but that's just me.
Otherwise I'd just let my buddy take care of it. We've all got a friend, and mines a G-U-N.

nuguy 04-18-2007 10:28 AM

Well ADBWeather does all the animated stuff, and goes very clean and simple too. I highly recommend it, and while I obviously haven't yet, I would (will) pay for it. HOWEVER: you certainly can try it out for a long time while you decide if you like it or not.

(off topic)
That commercial still cracks me up, and think what the sap would've looked like after getting beaned by an apache with the huge extended battery.

Crap, a gun is just 1 more thing to strap to you, I'm tryin to cut down on that.

Besides, the last thing the world needs is another "Raging Idiot with a gun".

(I couldn't resist, Rage, no offence man, but you laid that one in my lap)

nuguy 04-18-2007 04:07 PM

Hey!

I just went and checked out the link you gave, and followed it to http://www.happyjackroad.net/pocketp...us/weather.asp where it states

Licence: Freeware

What's up with that?

No really go ahead and try to take it...

verizonprisoner 04-19-2007 08:38 AM

Have SPBWeather running on the wifeys xv6700 (Saridnour ROM) and no complaints yet.

Lazybones 04-19-2007 11:05 AM

I would vote SPB as well.

I don't run the full version of SPB weather, but I do use the lite version of the weather tab included in SPB Mobile Shell and it works great.

saqer 04-22-2007 08:37 AM

does anyone notice any of those apps especially weatherpanel are battery hogs. Last time I did a hard reset I didn't install any weatherapps and I get significantly better battery life, but at the same time I had them autoconnect every 2 hours....could that have been the problem?

That's great seams that you are correct nuguy it is free  and can be redistributed so I am adding the cab to this post. This is a nice program but it is lacking the one thing that I like most about weather panel, today screen radar, I like being able to take a quick look at the radar. Here is the ADBWeather Plus v3.17 cab if anyone wants to try it.

nuguy 04-22-2007 02:26 PM

However, if you tap and hold in the wethaer area from the today screen - popup menu - select additional views - there you'll find all sorts of animated maps to choose from. not just radar, but forcast maps for pecip, temp, wind... There is a lot to this little freeware ap. You can even do a very nice detailed forcast on the today screen, I personaly prefer the compact view.

Raging Idiot 04-22-2007 11:33 PM

Yep, always liked the today screen radar in WeatherPanel. Didn't know any other app had that in it. Pictures?

The battery will drain faster during each connection instance that occurs, but how much faster is anyone's guess.

It also remains true that you shouldn't steal from anyone, because they might just be a Raging Idiot with a gun.

nuguy 04-23-2007 02:25 AM

or flip 'em the bird when they cut you off in traffic...

While you can access the maps from the today screen, they are in the viewer, not on the today screen.

Sparky2 04-24-2007 01:37 AM

ADBWeatherPlus problem.

I downloaded the cab (thank you very much) and there is a proplem getting weather data for *some* states. Seems to be western US only. I have emailed happyjack and am waiting for a reply.

The program seems to be much better than I expected.

nuguy 04-24-2007 02:02 AM

what state and city are you looking for, I'll test and see what I get.

Sparky2 04-24-2007 03:22 AM

Seattle, Washington.

linenoise 04-24-2007 09:21 PM

SPB weather here as well. I had a lot of freezing issues with it, until I loaded it onto my phone. As soon as it was removed from the storage card, it's been working 100% no freeze-ups. The only issue is that the auto-update only works 50% of the time. But I have no problems hitting the manual refresh.

nuguy~ every single time I've seen your siggy, I've laughed for a second. That commercial was indeed funny. My husband and I both have ppc6700's and they are double insured. So we'd throw em ;) (okay now that the whole 6800/no6700 thing is an issue, not so much....)

But it's hella funny still... man I'm chuckling just typing this.

nuguy 04-24-2007 10:27 PM

Well it's not an isolted thing anyway. I got an error about could not find 'moved' and a table size, that's no good...

Well what the hey it's Seattle, lemme guess, it's raining. Right?

Just jokin' I'm sure you wanna know when it's raining less, or more as the case may be! ;)

Have you tried any of the nearby towns?

Are you sure Seattle didn't move?

Thanks for the effort. I spent a couple of hours tracking the problem down before I posted and found that it appears to be a west coats problem. I tried 6 or so cities in Washington with the same results that you got.

In one instance, my internet connection timed out during an attempt and I got a different error. The error message reported the URL it was trying to open along with the parameters that it was passing. I copied that down and opened it directly from my desktop computer. It opened a NOAA weather page for the city (Monroe WA as I recall) and it was working fine.

My guess is that something on that server has changed and the way Happyjack extracts the information from that page is no longer valid.

Many states in the East work, and I even got good results from Kansas. LA did not work as I recall and neither did Montana.

I will try another email to Happyjack. I am afraid that if I do not get this working I may miss the only sunny day this summer ;-)

Hey Sparky I was pokin' around in the folders on my PPC this morning trying to free a bit of room and ran accross some files that can probly help. If you know what you're doing just poke around in the abdweather folders for a xml file for western US and see if any of the URLs don't work - you could get lucky here.

If you have no idea what your doing I can try, not sure when exactly, I'm busier than a puppy with 6 noses, let me know.
