New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

Hi everyone. You know when you sign onto the forums, and it tells you how many guests are browsing the forums, next to a list of users in general? Yeah, one of those was most probably me. At long, long last, the lurker finally comes out of the woodwork. :D

I have a Sprint PPC-6700 running Windows Mobile 5.0. It's a completely stock PPC-6700, as a matter of fact, with the yellow Sprint logo. It's been an absolutely stellar device for the almost-two-years that I've owned it, and because the thing seems to keep on kicking, I'm content to keep it for another two years (even though the up-and-coming HTC Touch Pro/HD whets my appetite). Because of this, I'd like to know how to breathe some new life into my device with Windows Mobile 6.0/6.1, if possible -- and yes, being well-versed in forum etiquette, I've looked. No offense, but there are just a bunch of threads about kitchens and ROMs and, well, frankly, stuff that doesn't mean all that much to me given that my knowledge regarding OS upgrades is pretty much limited to PC's (which involves putting a disk in and booting from it).

I really just have no idea where to begin. Is it possible to make a ROM that has only the software I want in it? What about SDHC support, I've done some searching around here and found that there IS a driver that allows the 6700 to read SDHC cards, does that driver and SDHC card work with WinMo 6.0/6.1? Is there anything I should be worried about, or especially careful of while upgrading? Will I notice a significant increase or decrease in stability? Is the camera application faster than the continent of North America in WinMo 6.0/6.1?

Where do I even begin?

Thanks.

Ok, where to start, it is my opinion that going to WM6 on a 67 is almost a waste of time because you get nothing major from it. Everything you get you can achieve in WM5 with themes and layouts but its your choice. It is not any faster or stable than a good WM5 ROM.

Since you know about the threads that talk about Kichens and ROMs and upgrades, I suggest you take the time and read them because what I or anyone else is going to say is going to be what has been said all in those threads you are ignoring.

So a good place to begin is reading those threads since they contain all the info you need. SDHC cards are able to be read with the custom building of a WM6(.1) ROM in the Kitchen but you can DL it from the link below and use it in WM5 also. Like I said, there isnt much difference from WM5 to WM6.

The camera still sucks on the 67 no matter what you do or try to do to it. Get a 6800 or a Diamond is the only solution.

I disagree. I've come to the conclusion that Windows Mobile 5 truly is wacked! I love WM6.1, forget the Palm Threaded SMS app, I like it stock. I want Direct Push while on a WiFi. I found all WM5 ROMs to be slow and lock up. Also there's a little radio program I listen to online wit an embeded WM stream. Well, it says "Access is denied" on WM5. But works on WM6/6.1 Also HTML e-mail. I don't know what you all use your phone for WAH but personally I find WM6 to be much more buisness minded. Anyhow like I always say, find what you like.

LOL.......Ive come to expect you to be on that side of the fence. ;-)

I use WM6 on my 68 and enjoy it. I even used it for a time on the 67 with no adverse effects. It truely is whatever you want to use. All I am saying is there are no huge gains. I dont like the native threaded app personally but there is nothing woring with it. Its just that I grew up with the Palm Threaded app ever since it was let loose for us WM users to use. Ive seen some bad WM5 ROMs as well as some WM6s. It is all about how they are made and configured with 3rd party software.

As you have said, it is about choice and perference but DAMMIT I SWEAR WM5 is better........j/k

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

Yeah, but all things considered, there are some features of Windows Mobile 6.1 that I really do want. Threaded text messaging is something that I'd love, as well as the Today Screen app by HTC that shows the big digital clock. Apart from the fact that it looks nice, it also tells me the time IMMEDIATELY without me having to squint and find the tiny numbers in the upper-right hand corner. This'd also help in my car, where my aftermarket Pioneer deck doesn't display the time (I haven't set it, I'm sure the capability is there), and I don't really WANT to set it because my phone on it's little windshield mount will tell me more accurate time (time zones, DST, synced with atomic clock, etc.).

HTML e-mail is also a really nice feature, as is better javascript support in IE. Windows Mobile Update is also there, and I'd like that. So I guess I'm gonna be reading some threads. :D

Yeah, PDAPhoneJunkie and I will also disagree on that one until we both get Diamonds (Pros) and upgrade to WM7.......LOL

Hehehe. Definitely saw that one coming! As predictable as the falling stock market that that debate will play out. Here's a good, current tutorial on the kitchens and pay special attention to the glossary of terms. Don't know which kitchen ppl are leaning to for stability these days, Helmi or LennySh, as there are new build updates all the time. Beware of large ROMs and 2.04/2.05 bootloader version...

Yup....... I don't think they would ever put WM7 on an Apache. I wouldn't dare try that one!

No, if his bootloader isn't v1.00 then he needs to select something else.

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

So, does BuildOS already have a ROM in there that I can customize and use? Rather, do I just select what I want in my ROM, build it, and export it to my device? :D

No, you need a kitchen. Like the Helmi kitchen. Then you load the config file and select what you want.

The deed is done. My Apache is more than I ever thought it would be -- with FTouchFlo, PCMKeyboard, and that wonderful (and free) big digital clock for my Today Screen. Threaded text messaging is awesome, and I love e-mail pushed right to my phone.

Ahhh.

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

I'm in the same boat as you. Only I dumped WM6.1 (at least for now) and am using WM6 kitchen. I just gotthe Palm Threaded SMS app. It rocks! I should have listened to WAH when he first reccomended it.

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

Why'd you ditch 6.1 for 6.0? I'm not saying it's a bad thing (indeed, if the Palm app is better I might do the same :D).

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

Because there is a tremendous wakeup lag. It's even worse when I use S2U2. I'm lovin WM6 for now!

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

Huh. That's cool, I've noticed that 6.1 is considerably faster on wakeup and on bootup than the default Sprint WM5 ROM. The volume control actually works in the same century that I hit the button, too. :D I may give 6.0 a try if needbe... is there anywhere that I can see screenshots of the Palm threaded texting application?

Re: New to Apache-modding, but want WinMo 6.1...

Well, anything is faster than WM5! A Palm device is better than WM5, lol, not! Google is your friend for Palm SMS.
