How To: Dual Boot WM5 and Linux
Post Under Construction
Just wanted everyone to know I'm working on a tutorial to do a dual boot of linux and wm5. linux running from your minisd card! the only downside no phone function in linux, but this allows u to run linux whenever u want or wm5. its nice to have that option. ~mike Screenshots http://www.ppcgeeks.com/images/ss1.png http://www.ppcgeeks.com/images/ss2.png http://www.ppcgeeks.com/images/ss3.png |
Got to have it. Where did you discover this? :o
|
like I had said in the off topic area, I have been playing with different flavors of linux. And I was reading a tutorial for ubuntu server edition linux, and ran across a tutorial for installing a version of linux on the apache. it was a tutorial for installing via linux so I'm working on one for installing via windows. its bootloader looks like the one from shadowmite, but I don't think their the same. I think if I'm not mistaken this version allows for the apache to fully function but without the phone. I will post a link to the orignal source when I post my tutorial.

my fellow Wideawake, you are soon to be ectremely 1337 on my list
...................i am so hungover....and thsi monitor is sobright |
hehe :D give me alittle time, I'm working on the partitions for the minisd now. once I get things working I will post what I did. ;)
~mike |
Ok so I have been workin on this on and off all day today and will continue to work on it tonight.....I'm trying do do it via windows so that many ppl can do it, but I'm having troubles. Anyone who wants to install via linux you can follow this tutorial HERE. If anyone finds a working way, or gets it working using windows only to install them let us know. :thumbleft:
edit: so far I have got the ext3 partition completed, and the bootloader, the only problem I am having is when booting, but I'm working on it. (remember I have very little experience in linux tho..) If someone can help, speak up ;) ~mike |
can someone explain to me the benefits of having this?
|
Wideawake, does this make the ppc operates fatser?
|
actualy it will probably make it work faster :D
|
xclusiv, it won't give u any directly noticeable benefits, basically its for those folks looking to try something new out. I haven't got it up and running, so I'm not 100% sure of the differences or exactly what apps are included, but theres linux apps out there for the ppc. I'm trying to install via windows, if I can't figure a way t get it to work without linux, I may go ahead and do the linux install method. Either way I will let yall know. ;)
~mike ~mike |
Well did you give up? I real wanted to try this.
|
that's right, where is my windows version o_O!!????
get to work bia.......s person :D |
hehe I'm trying guys, I'm not sure what's going on, and no one has voluteered to help. I'm so close I can taste it, but having problems with the boot.

Back on topic, I might have to try installing linux on my 6700 just for fun |
thats what I have been trying to do using windows only, and not linux, but Im having troubles with the boot, I guess the ext3 partition on the minisd isnt mapped righ, but Im not sure. Willing to try an help? Anyone?
|
I would be willing but i am a noob when it comes to linux I mean i was really excited when i got wifi to work on my linux install on my laptop and i was even more excited when i got divx movies to play over my network with audio and video(yes it was a pain in the ass to get to work)
|
see thats where Im running into probelms, Im also a complete n00b when it comes to linux.
|
I wonder if it would somehow be possible to get a WM5 emulator that could read the files it needs from the wm5 partition on the phone its self to get the phone working. cause if so that would be awesome
|
yea that would be sweet, but I'm sure someone will make it work, this has only been out for a couple months, so its still under development, I'm sure/or hope so at least.
~mike |
has anyont tried to get linux to work with the phone? and where did you get the ppc likux??

Bring it on man...I love Linux, I started with Linux since version 3.2 redhat me thinks.
Another toy to kill times with. |
I suppose the cheater way to install would be to use a 'Live CD' to get Linux running on your computer without actually having to install it...
|
whatever works right? im down for a liveSD (lol get it? live miniSD ) maybe a lil off topic, but anyone know if there are some bluesnarfing (dunno if thats right) tools? linux or not for the ppc? just like to screw around with a few friends phones
|
bluesniper gnafin ;) and I haven't messes with this in a long while. I might look back into it, but yea linux livecd would be a quick route.
~Mike |
it would be nice to make a linux base ppc....
|
I think this might really be taking off with what M$ is doing to xda-developers. Quite a few people seem to be mentioning linux. I'll definitely be searching for anything I can find out about it just so I don't have to use M$.
|
i just found this link. http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HTCApache
going to have to check it out after work......be good if this picks up that way M$ can't mess with stuff...but then M$ might start to support PPC... ya right..... |
yea gnafin it can be done with a linux pc....see the link I posted earlier in the thread.
|
Gentoo linux has a ppc port, might wanna check it out. I can't spare the downtime, but that would kick a.
let us know what you come up with X |
I noticed it's been a month since anything has been added to http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HTCApache .
Watching some of the other threads here, I'm willing to bet there are a few people here who could tackle the phone/data part of the phone and get something going. I just wonder if there would be any real advantage to replacing WM5 with Linux other than 'sticking it to the man'. It doesn't seem like there is a huge selection of apps to choose from, but any that are out there would most likely be open-source (Free) |
Actually now that i think about it, this could be an alternative to hosting the ROMs (incase M$ wants to take ours down too) if we could get the phone part working. I'm still running windows on my computers (home and work) though so i'm probably not going to head that direction right away.
Oh and it looks like they already got the 4gb mem card working  |

i think a open-source for the 6700 would be good, and get a way from the MS stuff.....
|
This should help you on your quest...after installing just use Gparted to partition your sd and the rest history...
I used to use Ubuntu before switching back to Windows... let me know if you need more help http://linux.wolphination.com/?p=18 :D |
