the apache has a phase 2 wireless 911 complient gps receiver for use in a smart phone dumb network setup so a 911 dispatcher can locate the phone

You know, I wonder if one could get the ROM upgrade and software that's mentioned (and linked to) on that link in the first post, open it up and find out what makes the GPS enabled/run/work and all the other goodies and see if it works for other HTC phones. I can't imagine that HTC would make such similar phones and change all the hardware pieces in each one. Would be way too expensive no? I have never seen a P3600 or any of the other phones on there actually, I wish I knew someone that had one though.

according to htc the apache DOES have a GPS chip (Not a a-gps chip), disabled by carrier request. There is quite a thread about it over @ pdaphonehome.com

I read the article linked to above, and tried to download the software, but they want a device serial# to download it so no go, anyone have access to one of these phones??? This could be a HUGE breakthrough!

i will worship whoever unlocks gps on the 6700.

if its not figured out once my dvi cables get here in a week or so and i finally have a desk setup i might just learn the programming language and try to figure it out for myself.. what would i have to learn to do this?

verizonprisoner 04-16-2007 08:09 PM

I am with aughsum... unlock the GPS on a 6700 and you get a false idol constructed in my front yard.

I looked all over PDAPhonehome and cannot find the mentioned thread about the GPS.

an interesting thought...given since we use stuff extracted from other HTC phones in our modded rom packages...perhaps it's only a matter of time before someone figures it out or HTC releases more rom upgrades for its other phones

nikki2beeps 04-16-2007 09:18 PM

direct link

http://www.europe.htc.com/support/so.../htcp3600.html

I am sure this could use some serious attention and someone out there has this phone to download this file and start the engineering

Bump!!

saqer 04-16-2007 09:26 PM

as stated before you need an serial number to access that download perhaps...i just wanted to ask programmers and those who are deep into the rom stuff if they think it's possible we can get this to work for the apache?

I have read some huge threads in the past week all dealing with the GPS, letters from HTC, phones and hardware and all sort of stuff. Frankly I'm lost by now. It just seems like maybe the 6700 has the wrong kind of GPS chip? Like we have one but it doesn't do autonomous (sp??) GPS or A-GPS or something?? Anyways. Don't want to start another huge thing re covering all that's in the other ones. I do wish someone could get ahold of that upgrade/software stuff on that link and see the code and stuff.

saqer 04-16-2007 10:02 PM

I don't know if this is a setback or not or if it's even relevant, but apparently the 6700 and the p3600 have different chipsets. The p3600 contains the qualcomm msm6275 and the 6700 the msm6500. You can compare the two at this link

http://www.cdmatech.com/docs_details...hip=24&chip=22

The good news is that both have gpsone and standalone gps support..so i'm crossing my fingers.

from what you've read some is true and some isn't. The apache does have a-gps but as previously stated only 911 activated. As far as standalone chip it does have the gpsone according to the chipset specs which supports stand-alone but we don't actually know if it has a standalone chip.

The 6700 can be used on the sprint locater service, but cannot be used as the parent phone. Which means it has something to do with the carrier unlocking something from their side to be able to locate a 6700 on the network.

I emailed htc myself multiple times and the last email they told me that it does indeed have ability to recieve GPS info, but they cannot release any information on how to unlock it as it is proprietary....exact word they used too

gpsone can operate in four modes:

* Standalone - Your handset has no connection to the network, and uses only the GPS satellite signals it can currently receive to try and establish a location.
* MS Based - Your handset is connected to the network, and uses the GPS signals + a location signal from the network.
* MS Assisted - Your handset is connected to the network, uses GPS signals + a location signal then relays its 'fix' to the server, which then uses the signal strength from your phone to the network towers to further plot your position. You can still maintain voice communication in this scenario, but not 'Internet/Network service' ie Web Browser, IM, streaming TV etc..
* MS Assisted/Hybrid - Same as above, but network functionality remains. Normally only in areas with exceptional coverage.

Some more info on gpsone here: http://www.cdmatech.com/products/gpsone.jsp

as far as all that applying to the 6700 it's also not clear.

I would also like to point out that the p3600 was released initially with no gps support.
