Data always connected after 3.5?

This may be a dumb question and it may have already been covered, but after installing saridnour's 3.5pr5, the data connection is always on and I am concerned that I will be billed out of every bodily orifice for data usage. Is it possible to set it to only connect and check every half hour or so, like it was before 3.5?

rawr 03-23-2007 08:36 PM

anyone?

Alwaysbelieve1 03-24-2007 12:04 AM

data has been always connected since 2.1

rawr 03-24-2007 09:39 AM

so there's no way to have it just connect every half hour or so, check email and then disconnect?

hrmm i noticed my data is always connected too now(ever since 3.5). Now it takes even more rings to reach me if someone tried to call.

So, quick question. Will being always connected to PCS vision have any effect on my phone calls and such? because I just added the Power Vision Pack to my phone and noticed that I too stay connected after it dialed #777 the first time...

I have NO idea what you guys are doing, but your data shouldn't always be connected unless you set it that way? I've been using Saridnours ROMS since PR3 i believe and not one of them has had an "always on" connection.

mgioia2--If you use Exchange ActiveSync for push mail it is quite normal to have an always-on data connection. Maybe that's where your setup is different.

If i want my email sync'd, i just run it at that time. I don't need it for work or anything, so i don't have it constantly sync'ing. That's probably the deal.

Ok, Now I'm seriously confused too... Because my data connection never disconnects itself once I connect, and I dont use exchange activesync at all. Is there a setting somewhere that I could have missed that makes the connection always on?

Hmmm, my data is on all the time too. I'm using Kirvin's stock 3.5. I haven't noticed missing calls due to late ring time. I have an old handset that had ring thru right from the start though. I've been using non-stock roms for so long now that I forgot but is voice always 1x only? And why can't voice be on EVDO too? I guess 2 separate channels for data and voice is convienient for the carrier though. Are all the other 3G formats like this? I for one would like highspeed for everything all the time? But that might be a 4G thing huh? Always living in the future. I'm kinda stuck between keeping my sprint service and going to a treo 750 on cingular. Or the tytn. Why? Cause they can do the one thing no other PDA phone here in the states can. What is that you say? 3 words...Roam in JAPAN! I go there often and it would be luxurious to have mail and internet capability in my pocket there....stumped...

I am using Saridnours ROM PR6 and I have noticed that my data connection is constant. The arrows are constantly up there and I am not using activesync push mail. Any ideas? I guess no need to worry as long as I have the unlimited data plan.

First lets clear up something, having data always ON can infer to states that have completely different effects on your ability to take calls. They are the ACTIVE and CONNECTED states.

Being Connected via EVDO just a state that sets up the necessary environment to send Digital communications. There is no inflection with regards to if the radio is, or is not sending information, only that it is capable of sending information.

Having you're data session Active means that you are currently transmitting information, or at least the phone thinks it is.

Since aku 2.2ish the phone will try to keep the CONNECTED state, before then It would usually close the data connection after transmission was done being ACTIVE. After this rom the phone tries to make use of the HOLD state, but usually fails causing a reconnect the next time an ACTIVE session is requested.

Since aku 3.3 (that I have noticed) the phone tries even harder to maintain a CONNECTED state and more effectively uses the HOLD state. Think of it as a dial up PC modem with call waiting. When you get a call, it sends the phone the info, and both parties put the data session on HOLD. You will then be presented with your call, by having the phone ring, and then the session will RESUME when the call ends.

Problems that I have seen with this call waiting feature usually arise from poor signal level in the area and having an ACTIVE state when a call comes in. They usually go straight to v-mail, get dropped entirely, or crash the phone. I have seen this happen across all of the rom versions I have used. It appears to stem from the EVDO connection seeming to have more priority than a voice call, or perhaps the HOLD request is sent over UDP and gets lost more easily.

Now as to the original question. If you're provider is proper, then you are billed per Kbyte, not per minute of data connection. Check with the rules of your provider. (I know sprint charges per Kbyte, if you don’t have unlimited data, or went over the hypothetical limit (never seen it happen))

Now, if you still need to or want to turn off the EVDO session when your done with it then you will need to script (cant remember the scripting langue avail for the phone) the email check, and then have the script close the connection, and then you will need to have the script run every time you want your email to check (I don't know how there, just know it can be done)

Hope it helps

by always on do you mean connected or actively send/receiving? since aku 3.x I've seen the send/receive activity arrows stay on even when there's no actual activity, unlike older versions where they'd gray out when that wasn't the case.

I am running 3.5 pr1 Kitchen and I can disconnect from the data without a problem. I am not sure what everyone means always connected. Did everyone try to disconnect in the connection manager?

bitslizer 04-27-2007 04:01 PM

no problem with manual disconnect

however what we want is automatic idle connection disconnect

in a strong signal area, I don't mind always on connection

however I've been running into case where the signal got so weak that the EVDO data is dropping into 1xRTT data and causing me to miss calls

if the connection would auto-discon from idle, this will minimize the drop to 1x RTT data thing....

that or someone write a hack that when the EVDO data switch to 1xRTT data, discon all togehter... that would be great
