Can someone answer me a simple question...

Why did the authors of software that allows the apache to be customized name it 'kitchen' ? That and other badly named references like Helmi this and helmi that, AKU, etc needed when trying to upgrade the OS on the HTC apache makes it amazingly hard for the learning newbie...

I'm trying to update my Apache Rom 2.06.00 WWE w/ rom date 02/22/06. This is a 'new' phone to me since my other Apache 3.14.30 WWE 's (6/21/07) touch screen is no longer able to be aligned. I've been using this phone for 6 months and have tried more than once to learn the terms and programs required to update and have failed miserably. I can read, write and analyze but still can't figure this out and those kitchen, if it's verizon or sprint, or alltel, or walmart, or whatnot really confuses me.

I currently live outside the US and in this country they can even activate a potato wired to a mic and headphones; they are that crafty. So if anyone can provide me with some easy to understand instructions, I'll be willing to give it another shot.

I think that the fear of unactivating my cell phone service by incorrectly flashing something on the phone also has inhibited my learning process here.

I don't mind staying with the official Windows Mobile 5 but I do want an updated version of WM5, the latest at least sine this 2006 ROM seems a bit buggy vs my old 2007 ROM (details upon request).
Thanks in advance & Cheers.

P.S My old phone said Verizon on it, my 'new but older ROM' phone says Sprint. My carrier is Viva.com.do in Santo Domingo City.

it's called a kitchen as far as i understand it because you throw in your ingredients and and out pops a customized "cooked" rom

as far as helmi goes he's the creator of the original wm6 apache rom and kitchen base kit

Thank you lightbiter. Sometimes knowing the reason helps with understanding. Your explanation has cleared up some of the mystery behind this process.

And cooking is easier than you might think a LOT easier.

It might also help to know that Windows Mobile is the operating system but it is sold to wireless carriers that "modify" it to work on their systems. That is the AKU upgrade business, e.g. Verizon has provided a sanctioned update for the XV6700 but other carriers may not have any ROM updates. The 6700 is "end of life" and not supported anymore with ROM updates. That is why the kitchens were developed, so that we could get WM6 and 6.1 on our phones.
