AKU 3.5: Internet Sharing/WModem/Multi-NAI question

Hi -

I just upgraded to Kirvin's AKU 3.5.

I previously tried using WModem with the Multi-NAI registry value set to 0. Setting the Multi-NAI registry value to 0 prevented the Apache from reporting a different address when connecting to the Internet via tethering.

The new Internet Sharing program is supposed to replace WModem, but I am wondering if Verizon / Sprint will now see a different network connection when tethering with the Internet Sharing program.

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

No, sprint has no way of knowing if the phone is tethered or not with the PPC. With our other phones we do because tethering is "locked" on the account, but with a PPC you cant lock tethering because there is no way to tell if its the phone using the bandwidth or a computer.

its kind of hard to explain on a technical level if you dont know what our billing systems look like, but your good, dont worry about it.

I don't believe that Sprint ever got Multi-NAI working even with wmodem.exe. Just because the registry entry exists (and was set to 1) doesn't necessarily mean that it actually used the modem NAI. In fact, I have never heard of a single person being charged for tethering (and you can bet most people never bothered to set MultiNAI to 0 in the registry).

You can also bet that Internet Connection Sharing is not set up to handle MultiNAI. These AKU 3+ files were brought over from GSM, which doesn't have that paradigm.

Also, if you notice now with ICS, the connection is shared over USB while remaining connected on the PPC side. You can still use the PPC to browse the internet while connected with ICS, which you couldn't do before with wmodem. Basically you are creating ANOTHER network that just leeches off of the cellular connection, so in short - No, nobody will know you are tethering with ICS. I would know too, as my notebook stays tethered while I am on the road almost 24/7 and I haven't heard a peep from Sprint. I am a trucker too, so I am on the road a lot :)

I wish there was an equivalent to Ethereal for Pocket PCs - That would be one way to be sure.

Verizon's my provider. Hopefully, what you're saying for Sprint applies to the Verizon users as well! :)

I would have to assume so, just because the devices are identical in every way (except color really, lol) So my guess is that the connection would be handled in the same way also.
Also, thanks to Verizon my coverage got much better with PRL 20226. I see people complaining on other sites about not having Verizon data roaming, but it works good on my phone - even with Verizon EV-DO

I have been using internet sharing a lot. So far I have had no extra charge from Verizon. I don't really think they can tell. THe connection is all based on the 6700, and not initiated from the computer.

Tethering vs Internet Sharing

For my work laptop, I am prohibited from using ActiveSync (syncing personal phone to work laptop), but have been allowed to install the Sprint Dialer, so I can currently tether it. Without access to ActiveSync, will I lose the ability to tether mywork laptop if I upgrade to a 3+ ROM with Internet Sharing, or should the dialer still work? My current ROM is 2.06, and we are still on XP at work (though will get new laptops with VISTA w/in the next few months).

My apologies if addressed elsewhere (searched several ROM threads), and thanks for any assistance.

If the "Sprint Dialer" is your mechanism for tethering your 6700 to the internet via USB, Internet Sharing should do the trick for you. In addition, it's faster and more stable. If you are looking for Bluetooth tethering there are still some issues with Bluetooth PAN and the Microsoft stack.

Internet Sharing will not work for you--it requires ActiveSync to be installed on the PC (I assume you are speaking of USB tethering).

But you can continue to use wmodem to do it the old fashioned way. I think most of the custom ROMs have left that in. Keep in mind it can be flaky under AKU 3 if you've already got #777 connected from the handset (you will get "COM OPEN" errors, sometimes even after disconnecting from the net). But a soft reset always fixes it.
