Newb with WEP question

Hi all, new to the forum (and the XV6700 as well). Love it so far. Just updated it to AKU2.5 and like the changes. Thinking about going further but want to play with it for a while first.

Now to my question. I have a Wi-Fi network at home and I set it up with a 5 character ASCII (a.k.a. 40-bit) WEP key to keep my bandwidth to myself ;)

Trouble is I can't seem to get the XV6700 to connect. I've tried typing it in as 5 ASCII characters, and as 10 hex digits, but no matter what I do it comes back as "the Key entered is not correct"

What am I doing wrong here?

Make sure your authentication mode matches up what the router is configured with (open or shared key).

Yup, both set to "open"

Any other suggestions?ing fro

After I enter the key in hex (digits & letters) in the networks list it shows "connecting" for a few seconds, then switches back to "available"

My WEP key is R+B=M in ASCII, which translates to
52 2b 42 3d 4d in hex.

Is there some restriction on which characters the WEP key for the PPC can use?

Also, after the status switches back to "available" when I go back to edit the network key again, the checkbox for
"the key is automatically provided"
is checked again and the WEP key I typed in has been wiped out...

I would check with the company that made ur router. I had a similar problem trying to get my mac hooked up onto a router I got. Now this is going to be really hard to believe, but you wanna know what the fix was? I had to add a $ sign before my password! This wasn't in the manual at all(and yes, the router specs listed it as Mac compatible)!

So, quite possibly, it might just be something obscure like that.

Well, yeah, that's what I was kinda thinking. That's why I posted the question - hoping someone here would know the details of whatever obscure thing is stopping me.

I've tried about everything I can think of at this point - including creating a WEP key from purely alpha characters, creating one from only numbers, etc. and entering them in both ASCII and hex formats - nothing works.

I tried the wi-fi at the hotel I stayed at on Thursday night and it worked fine on their unsecured network. If I disable WEP on my network it works fine too. I don't get it....

Anybody?

I guess I could always just remove the WEP security from my wireless network and use MAC filtering instead....

Not too crazy about that idea though - its kinda a pain to admin and someone might be able to defeat it with MAC cloning.....

Is someone really going to find/clone and wreak havok on your home network?

My keys seem to work fine with my system.

I would suggest upgrading to aku 3.x before you start programming MAC adresses. AKU upgrades in WM5 I recall do something to WEP, although I forgot exactly what.

LOL! Not much trouble "finding" it - I can see two other wireless home networks some of the time. Signals are weak, but they come and go. Like most people I have a fair amount of financial info on my main desktop system. If I dropped the WEP, I'd have to go to MAC filtering, or PW protect my HD shares, etc. A bit of a pain just to hook up my PPC to the network.

What version/flavor of AKU 3.x do you recommend? So far from what I'm reading just about all of them have some kind of issues or lacks something I'd like to have. MMS doesn't work, or the camera display is whonked, or the SD card slot has issues or whatever. I'm not criticizing anyone's work - I think it is pretty incredible that you guys can do what you do. But so far I haven't seen one that I'm ready to jump into.

Ideally I'd like to see a version of 3.5 for the Verizon XV6700 that has ALL the original programs (or better versions of same) and all the phone's native features 100% functional, with the ext-rom unlocked, WEP working, etc.

Maybe you can make a suggestion?
