Any Big reason to upgrade to 6900?

Hey guys... i was just at the Verizon store getting my bro's phone fixed and they had a 6900 in the store. Kinda cool.. not that great. Screen seems a little brighter but thats probably because mines old, the touch was a little more responsive then on our Apache's... but overall i dont see a big reason to upgrade.

Is the power of both PPCs equal? or close? They both use 400mhz processors right?

Should i upgrade or hold off for the diamond or pro? I can get a 6900 for $250 because im elegible for a phone upgrade and theirs a $50 rebate but im not so sure.... am i missing anything?

I mean the 6900 i looked at it didnt even have built in GPS. Whats up with that? Did Verizon nix it or is it just hidden?

They do have the same speed cpu, but the touch has much more RAM. The screen on the touch IS brighter. And it doesn't have gps software. There ARE ROMs on this forum for the touch that will unlock the GPS, however.

Well that clinches it with the cpus being so similar i dont see much reason to upgrade, unless i get handed one im not going to spend the money to upgrade. The lack of keyboard is both a plus and minus to me.

Ive heard the Diamond and Pro will have much faster cpu's... theyll be using the next gen.

What i dont get is back in 02 and 03 i was reading a report on a new .5-1Ghz PPC chip that was reported to be able to hit 2ghz in a bigger ppc... where the hell are these? I personally think that the people making the ppc's came together and decided to not constantly be one-upping themselves in the CPU power department, too much money in R&D maybe or loss of profits. But we could be having much more powerful PPC's almost equivalent to the last Pentium M's (right before the CoreDuo's came out). I want more! more god damn it more!!

Just FYI, the iPhone uses a 600Mhz

The processor may be only 400mhz, however, it's a different animal altogether than the apache; mainly due to it being a dual core processor, basically, having a separate 133mhz core dedicated to the phone part.

The biggest advantage to the touch is by far it's memory... Here's your "big" reason to upgrade, big memory:
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/phones/Sprint-Touch.htm

"The Touch has 128 megs of RAM (used like RAM on your computer to run programs), with 73 megs free at boot (that's nearly 3x available memory on the Mogul and almost 4x compared to the GSM Touch). This means apps will run more smoothly and you won't have to quit apps to free up memory very often. We hope that all Windows Mobile devices come with this much RAM going forward! For storage, the Touch has 256 megs of flash memory with 151 megs free for your use to install programs and store data"

The Diamond is a completely different monster. It will cost you a hell of a lot more than the Touch, too.

Unfortunately, those of us like that are far and few in between :( most want the functionality of a PPC, and the battery life and the compactness and whatnot. So the market basically says you and me, we can't have those water cooled quadcore 1.21 jiggawatts pocket pc's... ](*,)

Hm.... so their is a good reason to upgrade. But..if i do upgrade it will be another 1-2 years before i upgrade again so should i grab the 6900 or wait for the Diamond or pro to come down? Are their processors much faster?

Also my biggest/hardest thing im trying to do right now is get Command & Conquer running on my PPC. It wont run on my 6700 no matter what i try. Ive used PocketDos, then Pdosbox, then PocketDos w/ added DLL for 3/486 emulation THEN back to Nop's custom version of Pdosbox all with no luck. I always get the same error in PocketDos some codes and OP something or other and with Pdosbox i can actually load the Setup.exe file but when i run the game it does the DOS4GW thing and starts to load then immediatly shuts down.

I love the apache but what a difference with the 6900 - faster, lighter, much more memory - and with ppcgeeks' kitchen, unlocked internal gps, wm6.1, etc. Given how long it took vzw to release the 6900, I wouldn't count on another wm device for quite some time!

Re: Any Big reason to upgrade to 6900?

I had an apache and bought a touch when they came out. My touch feels like it has '1.21 jiggawatts' compared to my apache. And honestly i would say after a month or so you wont even miss the hard keyboard. there are so many soft keyboards its ridiculous.

but in my opinion since you seem to only get a phone when you can upgrade i would say wait until the end of this year and see what verizon lets out of the box as far as phones...

Hope that helps a little. :)
