Developer down
Well, i was working on 3.5 tonight with sfaure to get some kinks worked out before the fixes are compiled into an improved Base kitchen and the unthinkable happened. I loaded a rom and it got stuck at the bootscreen. Ok many of you are probably thinking something like "isn't that what happened the first time he tried 3.5?" or "yeah so, flash the sprint rom" or "did you try hard resetting it? That means you'll have to press y and then space" Well all of those are true and i've tried each. But this one is different. I flashed the stock sprint rom, hard reset and still got stuck at the splash screen. Removed battery etc. Still nothing. I can get in bootloader and reflash (which i've done with a known good and then the sprint rom) with no improvement. It does however show the different splash screens so it is writing something.
It looks like my phone might have bit the dust, and it's a very inconvenient time with all this excitement going on too. I might take it to sprint and see what they think, but what do they know? I didn't get insurance and you are all probably thinking i'm crazy for that too, but hey it's not like i dropped the thing. I'm still gonna hope to get the thing working, but it isn't looking good at the moment. My backup phone would have to be an old samsung a500 if i will be waiting on it. |
Wow sorry to hear that.. I had my phone a grand total of a week and my battery pooped out on me.. They replaced it even though i didn't have insurance at the time since it was under 30 days.. But said they wouldn't had it been over.. So i got insurance.. And after a month and a half, my joystick got stuck in the down position..and wouldn't move.. So i am on my second ppc right now. When i went to get my new one Monday they said they weren't getting any new 6700 in stock.. I guess its due to the 6800 or something...
|
Wow... that sucks. Nothing I can really suggest--you're smart enough to have tried everything I can think of... other than things that probably won't have any bearing like trying to boot with the AC plugged in, or making sure you've tried doing all of this in order: hard reset, put in bootloader, then flash all three Sprint ROMs (CE, Radio, extom). Try using both the original RUU and the Ma_upgrade_noid version. Try flashing only the CE ROM, or only the radio. Try someone else's custom ROM.
Heh, I guess it just depends on how many things you want to try--none of it stands a really good chance of saving you, but if you do all that and it still doesn't work you can reasonably bet that some component of your device got fried (maybe the RAM? RAM goes bad in PCs all the time, so there's no reason to think it couldn't on a PDA). It sounds like your flash mem is fine if the ROMs are going on OK (and you see the boot screen). How long have you had this phone? If it's not been a year you always have the UTStarcom warranty as a last resort. Edit: The battery is a possibility. The AC and battery are in series (i.e. phone will not work just on A/C--the battery must be in) so perhaps if the battery's shot maybe it's not passing enough current?). Again, a long shot. But if you have access to another battery it might be worth trying. |
If you arent able to exchange it, would you be willing to dissect it and see how it compares to my disassembly pictorial I made for the xv6700?
|
Oh that's a year? Hooray!!!! I only had mine since the beginning of November. I guess i'll have to look into how their warranty stuff works and how long it takes etc.
Oh and you'd be surprised how many of those unlikely solutions i've already tried  |
On the contrary--not surprised at all. You know your stuff!
But I'm glad that you should at least be able to get your phone repaired under warranty. The only problem is that from what I remember reading they give you a pretty outrageous turnaround time (several weeks) and don't support cross-shipment or anything cool like that. But it beats having to buy a new one! I'm pretty sure if you call *2 and speak to PDA tech support they will advise you on how to get an RMA from UTStarcom. Good luck! |
No offense but how the :cussing: am i supposed to call *2? heheh I know i'll just get the 1800 number and call from a landline just had to use the cussing guy at least once in this thread :D
oh and about the disassembly, if it didn't void the warranty i'd think about it, but since that is an option i'm keeping it in tact. |
Heh... good point. So that I can actually be helpful to you, here's a link that should get you what you're looking for:
http://www.phonenews.com/phones/inde...Numbers#Sprint Let us know how it all turns out. |
ImCoKeMaN,
Let us know what happens after you take the phone to Sprint. If Sprint doesn't hook you up, perhaps Unified ROM Project Team can. :D |
Gaah... that's crappy.
Um... yeah. I got no good ideas :( Hopefully it can be resolved. |
You reflashed the sprint rom including the radio, right?
|
The same thing happened to me yesterday after cooking up a ROM.
Reflashing the offical AKU 2.2 didn't work neither did 3.3 so I flashed the original Helmis 3.5 and after about 8 hard resets it finally got past the bootscreen. |
1) I assume you've tried the newest mtty.exe on your pc (from the 'stuck in bootloader mode' thread). This worked for me this morning when I tried doing a wm6 load this morning, I also hard reset, and basicaly kept trying all those things and GOT IT!
2) If you were on Verizon they would exchange it for you at a store AFTER getting approval from phone tech support. I don,t know about sprint, but with Verizon I ALWAYS get the best answers on replacements by calling NOT by going in... Good Luck! |
I too was stuck at the bootloader until I did the mtty.exe trick, then it worked fine.
|
I had same problem, but found out it was the memory card which was bad. I froze at same point.
Took it out and then all ok. The mem card not only froze mine , but my co-workers Verizon model and also failed to work on laptop. Anyway I hope you resolve that problem, and don't forget to have your carrier splash screen when and if you turn it in! |
thanks for the tips guys, i checked the sd card, it's out. I replaced the stock rom so they don't say a word. I stopped in a sprint store get the utstartcom number, i might call the sprint number as well. And it's not stuck in bootloader it's stuck at the splash screen so the mtty shouldn't be the issue. For those that are just joining and might not read the whole thread, yes i hard reset it (numerous times) pressing Y and space
There's a quick update....we'll see how this goes. In the meantime i'm back to the old a500 so at least i have a phone to call sprint with (even *2 if i want :) ) |
Sorry to hear about this Imcokeman. In a weak attempt to add a little levity, have you tried this:
Up,UP,Down,Down,Left,Right,Left,Right,A,B,Select,S tart |
Your best bet is to pay the $55 to get it replaced at your local sprint store(assuming they cant fix it), then make certain you add the ESRP so you dont have to pay it again
The best case alternative is spending over a week with your A500 (not a fate I would like to endure) Send me a PM if you have any questions about the processes |
This may sound noob since you can load the rom, but have you tried a fresh install on another computer, incase there is any interference that exists elsewhere? (firewall, antivurus-updated virus definitions, some other coruption/addition, installer prob)
Edit: the reason I ask is because the fact that you can go thru the install process means the unit should be functional. |

As for the 55 bucks thing i thought that would change something about the account like renew contract or something (you can pm me details if you like). I'm not sure about the money vs the week thing at this point either. We'll see though i'll probly be crying uncle by monday :D ps: different PC, USB cord etc still doesn't help either. It doesn't really take the flash completely as when the sprint flash program comes up it doesn't show any old version at all. EDIT: i already called sprint to get the utstarcom number so i'm sure they know the phone is broke and i won't be able to get the insurance if i wanted it. I have tried the utstarcom number, but they are only open weekdays. That means no ppc for the weekend definitely, and perhaps much longer  |
Go talk to your local Sprint store (full service). Tell them you want to exchange the unit and are willing to pay the $55 (for not having ESRP). They will send the phone back to the tech, after he is done working on it (assuming he cant fix it) he will approve the exchange. In most cases they will replace it in store, in rare cases they may need to order one for you. If they have to order it usually takes 3 or so days (you keep yours until it comes in) but they will tell you to come back in 5.
After you pay the $55 for replacement you will be able to add the ESRP program so that you wont have to pay for future replacements (as long as you dont loose it or drop it in water, thats another program). The main benefit to paying the $55 is the ability to add ESRP for the future and a high likelyhood of getting an exchange in store. Trust me when I say this is the best option. FYI most full service locations even have techs on sundays, depending on what area you live in. |
Ok, heres a little more detail of what went on. I went to the corporate store to have them look at it they told me the utstarcom warranty number. I called it, they are only open weekdays. called sprint mentioned that part, they said to wait was their suggestion, didn't say no 55 dollar thing for sure, but didn't give help. I went to a closer store, they said i needed to go to a corporate store and talk to the manager. I called that store mentioning all that went on they said they didn't have any in stock and couldn't help me (haven't got them for a few months) So that's where i'm at now. On top of all of this i'll be away for Officer training in the Air national guard starting march 10th til april 20th. This means that if i were to be able to "borrow" one i would only use it for about a week. I'd love to have it to pitch in right now especially though, but it isn't looking like i'll be able to do it with the warranty or the $55 way.

Depending on how long you have been a sprint customer.. the retentions department might be able to help. Call 1 800 sprint1 and say cancel service. They have helped me a million times before. Say new phone or I cancel and they seem to be pretty nice

personally i think you should tell sprint..
"Hey... I've been doing for FREE what you're tech support people should be doing, and making these phones work for you're end customers. Indeed not only should you replace this phone here, but you should give me 2-3 ADDITIONAL ones, as well as a pre-release of you're 6800. That way I can be sure that you're customer base has a decent phone, and is overall pleased with you're service." Heck while youre at it you should give me some major stock options, that way i continue to be movitvated to help support you're customer base that you and you're bohemith politcial organization takes for granted. But then hey, thats just my opinion. |
ImCoKeMaN check you PMs
|
I somehow missed this yesterday. I know you mentioned you tried flashing the Sprint ROM back in and no luck. When you did, did you try reflashing all three files? If not, hard reset and try all three files. For the heck of it, try it twice (hard resetting before each time)
This has happened to me before and that was how I was able to recover. |
checked my pms and yes i reloaded all three files numerous times and hard reset numerous times among all the troubleshooting. It is with UPS now to send to UTStarcom =(
|
That stinks...I have a problem with my phone (the soft re-set button wasn't functioning at all...probably from all of the testing I have been doing as of late ;) ), brought it to my local Sprint store and they replaced it for free...

How does this episode end? I know this is old by now, but ever try having someone else with ESRP insurance activate your phone on their plan and take it in for repairs? I mean buy your phone from ya and sell the repaired/replaced one back to you? -CC |
