GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
I have both delorme and MS streets and trips for pocket pc. On my dell pocket pc (PPC) they have worked great with my hand held gps on a serial (db9 to PPC connection) I want to use the gps programs with my gps inside the phone. The phone has GPS for 911 purposes, it can redirect to several com connections (1-9) and several gpd ports (1-9) I am not sure what the gpd are unless they are blue tooth ports. I need some way to use the phones gps with either of my programs.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
gps in teh 6700 is at this point useless.
the only hope is for someone to hack the radio rom and activate the chip. Copy |
Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Good luck. I have tried all the 6800 gps hacks on my 6700 and it doesn't work. Google maps sees that there is a gps now, but the gps chip won't pick up any birds.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Bottom line is GPS on the 6700 has never been fully useful or even functional for that matter. You can add something like a Holux 240 and use it for GPS but you cannot get GPS out of the 6700 by itself. There are plenty of threads on this and NO ONE has ever made it work.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Someone should sticky a good GPS thread so this dead horse is no longer flogged.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
2 questions then:
One: does 911 even see the gps??? It is a federal law that it work. two: I still have my functional serial gps, how do I create a serial link to my old gps, can the usb be made to master? at this point I am about to take a couple of cmos chips and glue them to the end of the serial line and drive an IRd pair taped to the side of the pda. (which is what I had to do to my toshiba laptop (486 erra) This method is bulky, there is a matching box on the cable somewhere, but I know it works. If anybody is interested, I will post the schematic. The tricky part is the side that recieves the signal from the pda, too much gain and it amplifies the ac from the lights in the house, to little and you keep having to reinitate the gps reciever. |
Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Seriously, go with weedahoe's suggestion. Get a Holux bluetooth gps receiver. They run under 50 bucks and save you alot of hassle and bulk.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Thanks for the link, I ordered one. the idea I had in mind, would have cost at least 30 dollars. It would have been nice if the gps worked, to have it all in one package....oh well. I would still like to know if anybody got the USB port to reverse as a master. The chipset should have both modes.

...............and so the world continues to turn.....................

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
I've heard of reverse ports working on old iPaq's and the trick was to supply the power source externally for the port. Then when you pulled up resco (4 at the time I saw it) you could "network" to the port by telling the device a specific device code and volla.
I sure wish I kept that bit of info handy... And how the heck do I enable a thanks button at the bottom of my post. I am guessing to add a signature with my user id embedded in the link - whats the point of having a thanks count if it isn't easily accessible? Copy |
Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
You cant add a THX button in YOUR posts but they will be available in other ppls posts so you can click on THIER THX if thats what you wanna do. I think thats how it work.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Hmm, I've looked at Junior posts and they have the TNX button. That's discrimination, if somebody helped you out who cares what your status is?? :protest: I think it just showed up a month or so back. I don't care if I get thanked or not but I hate it when nobody gives an update. I haven't had any issues with my 6700 so haven't had to ask for any help....lately. =D> (Edit:supposed to be an applause emoticon but didn't show up! Edit2: The button goes away from your own posts so you can't thank yourself! LOL).

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
You can thank junior posts, Junior posters can't see the thanks button.

Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Follow this string backwards, it is like post 8 or 9 in this string. I paid 61.45 after shipping and handling, and I expect delivery monday. You get to pay with paypal so it is very secure. *Note make sure all is correct after you go to pay pal, there is no provisions for change, youhave to email any corrections and hope they read it prior to shipping, so inspect all data before you click continue!!
The web link I got was http://www.buygpsnow.com/bluetooth-gps_9.aspx the gps was holux M1000 32 channel. My price also includes the custom charger and fed ex shipping. Mine would have arrived, but I had a typo in my address and did not catch it so they froze my shipping until I emailed the correct address. I had email at night when I caught the typo. They do not have phone support, only chat and email support. All that aside, I will post a review on how my new toy performs!! |
Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
Here is the Holux 240 on ebay (link) and it is Buy It Now for about 70 bux total but if you can wait and do an auction you can get it cheaper.
Specs are important because the more sats it tracks (channels) the better the accuracy. Re-acquisition, Hot Start, Warm Start and Cold Start are important to most people also. Here are the specs on the Holux 240 I just like this one because it is extremely small and wireless (bluetooth), has good specs and is decently priced obviously. |
Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
I've used TOMTOM and iGuidance and between the two, I like iGuidance way better. I loved 3.1 until 4.0 was released. The major difference is now there is text-to-speech for the street names in 4.0.
Funny quirk: when I had bluetooth to my car stereo going, it would send out over the bluetooth: "Turn left at " and then the text to speech would play on the PPC itself: "broadway avenue" heheh.. also, I've developed a tool to turn on the bluetooth and load any program. once the program exits, the bluetooth is turned back off. let me go look it up real quick http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=24942 there it is. I hope more people get use out of it and spread it around. It's my way for me to give back to all you guys. Copy |
Re: GPS on XV6700 and Verizon
my toy came in today, I ended up with the HOLUX 1000 GPS. I really like that it comes with the car charger and for 10 dollars you can get the ac adapter charger. Microsoft streets and trips recognized the device right away. Delorme solaras never found it. Which is a real shame as the delorme is a better program, it shows speed and direction which is very handy when I fly( I never use a handheld as primary source as it is illegal, but if you are flying visual and dead reconing, this makes it great to find where you are and how far it is from where you thought you were!!!!) I like how quick it finds the satellites. As small as it is, it is the next closest thing to the gps being in the phone. I will try to use it tomorrow on my motorcycle, which is what I was wanting the phone to work alone. I put the cellphone on the tank bag and go. We like to just ride and sometimes we get lost. The software which comes with the gadget will lock up and quit on the pda right after it goes into 3d mode. I might have too much running, even though I would think that the streets and trips would have a greater overhead. One quirk I noticed, is I have to do a soft reset to get the com port released.
I think this is a great toy, thank you very much weedahoe. |
