Re: Wifi Help

Well, the problem is the initial connection and you said that it won't connect. That usually means some kind of access refusal. Once it connects, you should or it may automatically open a browser window to input that username/password. That is what happens with most pay WIFI access, e.g.ORD airport.

So you are saying that these WIFI users can connect but you need to ask if they had to do anything special from the school IT perspective to connect. There are alot of ways that networks can be configured so it is best to see how the school has it set up. They should have some "How to" page somewhere if they are not controlling WIFI access.

if the LAN is unsecure, then there's no need for a WEP key. as long as you can leech off an unsecure network, you're good.

I totally agree with 100% of this.

You mean WLAN as only wireless needs WEP and LAN is hardwired. But even so if you go to you WiFi settings and choose the SSID it will automactically tell you if it is encrypted or not. So if he goes to his school and (like in screenshot #3) it reads "Open" for Authentication and Data Encryption is "Disabled" then it is unsecured. If it is that AND he STILL cannot at least pull a IP then either IT has MAC filtration setup OR a limitied number of DHCP IP addresses to be assigned and that number is already maxed at the time he is trying to connect. But as said earlier, if he knows other are using an iPhone or Touch to connect and CAN surf then it would be wise to simply ask them if they had to do anything particular or simply picked up an ensecured spot and opened thier browser to surf (possibly after entering school assigned credentials).

Re: Wifi Help

I hate beating this with a stick but here goes:

I never got a clear answer to the status of the school WLAN. Say it was locked and not open. I have actually never tried to connect to a locked SSID unless I knew the correct key or passphase. I could do it now but don't have the 6700 with me. If it was locked, I would know to put the info in your screenshots. And there is no way to add a username/password, just WEP and WPA. Well, take that back, I think there is a way to add a proxy setting with user name, password, domain. Would that work? Wish I had my phone with me.

Or if he tried to connect and it was locked, would he expect to have a login screen come up so that it would connect?

Funny how things you routinely do can still have little intricacies about them.

Re: Wifi Help

Ok, here we go, if it were an encrypted network then there would no place for a UID/Pass. You would be at screenshot #3 where it says either......

Open with options of Disabled/WEP
Shared with options of Disabled/WEP
WPA with options of TKIP
WPA-PSK with options of TKIP

Any any case (other than Open/Shared with Disabled) there will be a place for a key that must be entered. As I said before, there is and will no place in there for a UID/Pass.

So IF it was secured and he entered the correct key then there would be no need to enter a UID-Pass in the browser. However, on the flip side of that coin, if the network were open and unsecured the anyone could theoritically connect (partially) but once they open the browser it would ask for those school assigned credentials that must be give before going any further.

Does that help?

Kinda off topic but thought I might give it a try instead of creating a whole new topic. If you dont have a pcs vision plan do you still get charged for getting on the net while using a wifi connection or is it only when you connect under sprints network?

that would be a no as long as you're leeching off of an unsecure local connection

Thanks, Weed. Yes, that is how I thought it would go but never having been in the exact situation, I thought we were missing something, since if an iPhone could connect, surely Windows Mobile could...
