Helmi Kitchen w/ ImCoKeMaN customized Rom tutorial
I packaged up the Helmi Kitchen i used to make my ROM last night and wrote a tutorial for how to use it. If you download this the tutorial is in the readme.txt file.
After downloading this you can easily recreate my rom using the readme.txt tutorial. The beauty of this however is that you can add ANY oem rom kitchen packages you like just by copying them to the OEM folder and follow the same steps from the readme.txt to create your OWN custom rom! Soon i'm sure many OEM packages will be listed on the ppcgeeks ftp site so this should be a great starting point for those who were leary of using the kitchen Oh here's the link: ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Apache/ImCoKeM...torial_aku_3.3 Credits: Helmi_c for the original apache kitchen which is the complete foundation Wideawake for the site where i found all this great info colonel for working on another custom rom and packaging the .net files schettj for help with the P&V and other support Thanks guys, happy cooking! |
Woohoo! Thanks!!! Going to read thru the tutorial shortly. This is spectacular.
I need more free time. |
Nice work. Why don't you throw it in the Wiki too so everyone can read and adjust it as progress is made. :)

First Rom made last night and first wiki entry made today....craziness. I updated the How To page on the wiki and placed a link to the Rom Kitchen tutorial.
Here it is: http://wiki.ppcgeeks.com/index.php?title=How_To |
Beautiful, i'm loving all the teamwork on this site. Kudos to all involved in the new Rom cooking experience!

I know this is written somewhere (because I recall reading it), but when you create your RGU and DSM files, they need to be unicode text files. Otherwise CreateOS will fail.
This is so much fun! I'm working on my own custom. Sure it'll fail the first time around, but I tried not to change too much. Hopefully it'll stick. My biggest hope (for now) is for an OEM package for the Crossbow theme. My understanding is that it's a little tricky to get the top and bottom bars on the today screen to look nice (like Colonel's). |
ImCokeMan,
I am definitely not understanding step 6 in your readme file. Can you elaborate? I moved my nk.nba into "Convert and flash" and ran the HTC64 tool. I selected nk.prj as my project file and ignored the unknown device error. Then I have 3 boxes. My project file is greyed out, so I can't change that. I don't want to create an extended ROM file - I'm on Verizon and actually don't require any extROM whatsoever - I just want a flashable nk.nbf file from all this. But it sounds like this isn't really the ExtROM, this is the ROM image I'm creating. So I put in a directory location and nk.nbf as a filename in that box. In the Fat16 box I navigate to my nk.nba file as you note (after selecting all files *.*). Then I press encode, and the thing runs for all of about 3 seconds and there's a 64MB nk.nbf file in the location I chose in box 2. But this can't possibly be right? I would think it would need to process for a long time. I suppose I can flash and see what happens, but I thought I'd see if you had any thoughts/clarifications first. Thanks! |
i'm going to be providing you a mirror for the file ;)

Haus,
You are following the directions perfectly! The ExtRom does not mean it is an extended rom, that is just the nomenclature of the tool. the conversion from .nba to .nbf is a quick one. Copy that file to the flash utils directory and you can flash your rom! The only way it would touch your extended rom was if you had an ms_.nbf in the flash utils directory as well (this is useful information if you decide to cook up an extended rom as well  ) Runt, Thanks for the offer, but if i'm understanding correctly we will be able to use a ppcgeeks ftp shortly and in the meantime i think the torrent and rapidshare should be enough. Especially if a few that use the torrent help to seed it. |
i'm uploading right now just in case. some day i will have to try to make my own rom, but i know i don't like colonel's......
