Newbie With a Few Questions

Good Morning, Everyone:

I came across this site yesterday and what a revelation! I have purchased an Apache XV6700 over Ebay that should be arriving shortly. I'll be installing IGuidance 4.0 on it with a Holux Bluetooth for GPS, and I have a few questions for all of you sages and prophets of all things Apache...your guidance and help will be MOSt appreciated!

1. Is there a way that I myself can switch my cell number over to the XV6700 and activate it and then deactivate my current Razr V3M without taking it to Verizon? I don't have a data plan, just phone service. If so, how? If not, any tips I need to know when taking it to Verizon?

2. Once I get it up and running, I'd love to start updating it from Mobile 5 to the Mobile 6 updates found here. I've already found the superb tutorial on how to setup and install them, but I'm wondering if someone can explain to me exactly what a "kitchen" is so I'm in the know (please forgive the ignorance).

3. Do the Mobile 6 upgrades here work like upgrades to my PC where I need to start with the first one and then work through the subsequent ones to get the most recent to be fully functional, or are they each their own fully functional version?

4. It reads to me like the very most recent build with that AWESOME green screen is still a bit funky. Is there a build here that you all recommend as the most stable for now for a first-timer to attempt?

I thank you all for your knowledege, your patience, and especially for all the hours of work that go into maintaining a place like this and offering those who come here the chance to keep such a slick piece of equipment up-to-date.

Peace,
RevG

Re: Newbie With a Few Questions

I can answer question 1 for you and I'm interested to hear about the answers for the other two.

If you have you account with verizon set up online, you can go online and find a way to transfer your service to your new phone. It's kind of a trick to find and it always takes me awhile, but it's there. However, when I tried it told me to call verizon which is what I did.

When you call them, you have to sift through a bunch of menus. On the first menu, you want the last option (#4 or #6) and then follow that out to actually talk to someone. Once your with a rep, just tell them you have a new phone and they'll walk you through everything. I also told the lady to block all data so I wouldn't accidentally get charged a ton. This also means I can't get picture messages (MMS), but that doesn't bother me.

That awesome green screen you are talking about I think is 6.1, which I want also. It seems it works now for the Titan, so it's only a matter of time till we get it.

Hope that helps.

They are each their own independent versions. The WM5 kitchen(s) are all single versions of WM5 and each work independently. The same goes for the WM6 Kitchens. And it's not the same as a Windows upgrade either on a desktop/laptop. When you put a new one on, you lose everything that was on the phone (contacts, sms/mms messages, call logs, files). There are programs however that allow you to backup this stuff, such as PIM Backup, so that it can be restored later. Just back the stuff up, transfer the file to an SD card or your computer, flash the phone and put the file back on the phone to restore the stuff.

The latest kitchen (WM6.1) is pretty nice. It's much faster than WM6 for me and I haven't noticed any major bugs with it yet, though I could be a random case. The WM6 kitchen that came out on 12/17 is pretty stable, though it has some WM6 bugs that are fixed in 6.1. No matter what you decide upon though, if you have a problem, I'm sure the people here would be more than willing to help out and I'd also guess that you'll be very pleased with what you choose, especially if you are comparing it to the stock ROM that is available from the carrier.
