A few questions about WM6 rom
Hello all:
I am a new user to PPCs, and am trying to get a 6700 or possibly a 6800, and I have several questions. Please bare with me. Thanks. BTW, Verizon Wireless is my phone carrier if that makes a difference in the answers. 1. I hear that a lot of people like the 6700 over the 6800 because it is less buggy, even with the WM6 rom. Is this true, what are your opinions comparing the 6700 to the 6800? 2. If I do end up getting the 6700, do you think it is worth flashing to the WM6 rom? I hear that users have problems sending and recieving picture/video messages with the rom. Is this a simple fix? Also, once you cook the rom you have to make sure you cook it with the applications that you want; because you can't uninstall them. Is this a huge deal to everyone? Again, your opinions on the usefullness of WM6 rom, and if it is buggy or not. 3. What about Rob Mayer's WM6 update? I have been hearing a lot about it and how excellant it is, but I can't seem to find it anywhere, what gives? Is it nice than Helmi's? I have tried to do as much research as possible, and I want to thank Ga. Medic for his tutorial on Helmi's Kitchen. It is simple yet efficent. Thank you all for taking the time to respond to me. It is much appreciated. |
Oh yeah, and what exactly is an "aku" and a radio? Thanks.

The 6700 is slightly more stable than the 6800. This primarily manifests itself in the bluetooth drivers. The 6800 is better in pretty much all other respects. The 6800 currently does not have an official kitchen and the ROMs are kind of spotty (there are a couple of great ones, but most have issues). This will not be the case for much longer, so I wouldn't let that disuade me from a 6800.
If you get a 6700 or a 6800, you should definitely flash to a Helmi based ROM. Stock roms are lousy. Rob's rom is based on Helmi's, so fundamentally it's the same. You can find a link to his rom in the 1st post in his thread. Most people who have the stones to visit this site should use the kitchen. The downside of the kitchen is you can't have everything in your ROM, so it's tough to limit yourself. The downside of using Rob's rom is that you are dependent on him for any fixes (and you're stuck with his decisions for tweaks and apps). If you like to have the latest and greatest, you want the kitchen. People do have troubles sending and receiving picture mail. Generally this is a failure to understand the limitations of your carrier or to use the right MMS package. Cooking a ROM in the Apache kitchen is trivial, so it's not a big deal having to re-cook when an app is updated or you'd like to try something different. The problem is reloading all your non-ROM applications and data whenever you flash - but that problem exists whether you choose the kitchen or a pre-made ROM. You can always flash a ROM with nothing pre-loaded, but there are quite a few rarely changed apps that people like to fill up available rom space with (it's wasted if you don't fill it). An AKU is like a version number for Windows CE. A Radio ROM is exactly that...a ROM for the cell radio in your PPC. Few if any people need to alter/update it. |
I forgot to add that the people that write such glowing reviews of Rob's ROM are comparing it to WM5 or other early (buggy) WM6 ROMs, not against the current WM6 kitchen. Everyone will tell you that anything based off the current WM6 kitchen (including Rob's ROM) is much better than anything before it.
