Verizon + Open Network + Google = Android Kitchen ?

So, has any of the Apache gods here thought about running Android on the Apache?

weedahoe 11-29-2007 12:30 PM

Android is not an application but software development tools designed to help create applications to run on devices like ours, it is nothing to "run" on apache, unless I am misunderstanding what you are suggesting.

I thought Android was a complete OS. So, theoretically, wouldn't that mean a replacement of WM6?

I guess an Android Kitchen probably wounldn't have a whole lot in it yet.

From the Open Handset Alliance FAQ:

What is Android™ and how is it different?
Android is a complete mobile phone software stack. It includes everything a manufacturer or operator needs to build a mobile phone. Android will be made available as open source via the Apache v2 license. Android was designed from the ground up to enable the best user experience possible on a mobile phone. It leverages web and Internet content to provide advanced services such as mobile mashups.

Exactly what is says here. It is something a developer needs to build software with. Remember software is what makes hardware work. So potentially you can write code and build a program to run the hardware but Android isnt an OS itself. That video does a really good job of explaining it all.

](*,)

Please let someone else answer now.

Android IS an OS, however, what has been released CURRENTLY is nothing more than an SDK so that developers can gain familiarity with the software stack (which means OS, applications, drivers, etc). There are some pretty explanatory diagrams which show the layers of the stack that Android fills, and it is everything from the kernel up (probably the bootloader too).

Cliffs:

Android=OS
SDK=Not OS

Yeah, the SDK contains an emulator and a few sample apps to play with. You dont have to be a programmer or know any code to use it, its just a simple .exe program. I recommend to anyone that is interested in Android to download the SDK and check out the emulator, its fun to play around with and gives you a good taste of whats to come. Granted, I love my 6700 and WM6, but I'm a Google nut and I cannot wait to see how Android changes the SELLphone game.

I'm a google nut as well, i use most of their apps and would love to have them all working on my 6700 seamlessly. HTC is a major member of the Open Handset Alliance. It'd be pretty neat if they released an official Android ROM we could flash to our phones.
