PPC Gmail changed in WM6 kitchen?

In previous WM5 and Helmi's WM6 ROM, I could check and read my Gmail from my PPC-6700, and every time I sent and received again, the existing emails would still be there, and any new ones would be added to the display. Then when I got home, Outlook would download the same messages to my computer. Basically, it worked the same as it does when I access Gmail through a browser.

Now with Helmi's WM6 110807 kitchen, I can see and read my Gmail, but when I send and receive again, the previous messages are removed from the phone, and only new messages are displayed. Then when I check from home, Outlook doesn't download the previously read emails. They are still on the Gmail site, but I can't get Outlook to download them. When I noticed this yesterday, I noticed in the Gmail settings that IMAP was enabled. I disabled it but still have the same issue.

Has something changed with the way Gmail works in the kitchen, or could I have set something wrong in the setup?

Jim, the automatic gmail setup was changed in the 20071107_2 version of the kitchen back to the default way, which is using POP3. In the first two revisions of the kitchen (20071105 and 20071107_1) I had changed it to use the new IMAP functionality by default.

The reason I reverted it back to POP3 is because gmail's IMAP functionality currently has problems with the Windows Mobile e-mail client in which many messages are completely blank (no content) on the device. I'm sure they will get it corrected on their end in time, but meanwhile to cause less problems for people I changed it back so that it once again uses POP3 servers to set up a gmail account (that would be the default on any WM6 device on the market).

However, you can absolutely override the auto setup and use whatever servers you like... when you're setting up a new e-mail account there is an option for that on the screen where it asks for your e-mail address. Uncheck the box that says "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet".

Thanks for the responses. I do have both Outlook and the PPC set up to leave messages on the server.

I did use "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet" when I set up the Gmail account, but I don't see IMAP in the PPC's Gmail settings:

Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
Account type: POP3
Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: smtp.gmail.com

My preferred setup is to view new Gmails on my phone when I'm out, but be able to view them more than once, and then be able to download these emails to my Outlook when I get home. Are you saying that In order to get back to this behavior, I should set up Gmail to use IMAP?

Try using a username of "recent:jsmith@gmail.com" on the phone and in Outlook. I had this exact same problem when I switched to WM6 and this solved the problem. I found it on Google's help site under the Mobile Email section.

I know I can use "recent" to get all emails, but I would still like to know if setting Gmail up for IMAP would restore the old behavior of my first post. The main functionality I want to get restored is to be able to download the messages on my PC with Outlook when I get home. They are still on Gmail, but for some reason they get treated as if they were already downloaded, so Outlook doesn't re-download them.

Not to be too pushy, but I am leaving for a 12 day tour of Europe in a few hours and would like to get this resolved while I'm still on this side of the pond. Not being able to download 12 days of email to my PC when I get home would be very frustrating.

I had this problem also. I just set the username in Outlook as well as on the phone to have the "recent:" at the beginning and my phone will check emails and outlook will also download them. I do not have "leave on server" checked.

IMAP would work fine... downside is, for some html emails, you *still* might not see the message bodies in WM6 (still not fixed, last I checked http://groups.google.ki/group/Gmail-...a906d95fdd8745 )

Thanks schettj. If that is how the Helmi's early WM6 Rom and kitchen were defaulted to when I let them look for automatic configuration, they worked fine for me. I'll give all of these a shot in my spare time while sitting in the street side cafes in Europe.
