No, we saw it.
What you don't seem to know is that neither helmi_c nor PPCgeeks asked for or designed/developed the banner. That was our way of giving thanks to them - this kitchen wouldn't exist without them. Your comment about programmer ego was way off mark. Furthermore, you missed that the original poster was voicing concern because of a non-obvious issue he perceived. That's very different from "the banner is graffiti on my awesome splash pic". The former is constructive feedback. The latter is whining. Even so, I intentionally left ways to circumvent the banner. With a trivial amount of effort, you can achieve what you are after. As I stated earlier, feel free to post any method that does not involve modifying the kitchen .rar - people with no technical abilities read these forums and I have no desire to support problems caused by such behaviour (as an example, the earlier method posted can and will trash your PPC if you use certain bootsplash pics and it will not be compatible with future kitchens). There are at least 3 different ways to avoid the banner that don't involve modifying the .rar. |
The psychological need for recognition of a person's work is what I was referring to. There are many public servants and philanthropists out there that help others daily without need or want of any recognition.
I understand you were only giving credit where it was do, that's fine, some of us just wanted the "proper credits and thanks" somewhere else inside. I'm sure it would be possible for us to have an hour long discussion on the ego/pride issues, but lets let it go for the sake of others. Thank you for leaving us options to configure our banner, much appreciated. |

The psychological need for recognition of your own work is ego. The psychological need to recognize someone else's work is manners. |

this is getting a little out of hand. I think it is safe to say the EVERYONE who wants the banner off DOES appreciate and WANT to recognize helmi. We just want it somewhere else. I dont want it to be easy for a thief to search a name and phrase like PPCGEEKS and figure out he can destroy my anti-theft deterrent. As fas as the banner being "the only thing they have," that is just completely false. I sent my donation as I know many others have. If helmi checks his donation lists, he should see my name. So, yes, his build was free... but he has been paid by MANY for his efforts. I think that keeping the masses happy is what keeps the donations coming. There are good points being made for removal. And to answer someone else's question... I can remove XP logos (and have) wherever I want. Microsoft doesn't care... as long as they are getting their money.

Personally, I think it's a waste of time anyway. All a thief needs to do is go to the carrier's or UTStarcom's site, download the latest device ROM and your splash screen is gone--so easy any idiot could do it. Your typical thief is not likely to have the skills nor the interest in taking the time to research how to remove your bootscreen--especially on a CDMA smart phone which is rendered half-useless once you report it stolen. It is exceedingly difficult to get an EV-DO CDMA device fully working with a changed ESN or on another carrier, so they're not likely to fetch much for it anyway (also considering it's now over two years old and has been superseded by other devices). IMHO the only potentially effective text you could possibly put on your boot screen is "REWARD IF FOUND"--money talks. And speaking of money, who you donated to and how much is irrelevant. This is all free software--thus we are all at the mercy of the people who create it and give it away generously. If you donate, you're showing your appreciation (and donations to these folks are much deserved), but that is not the same thing as if it were commercial software or shareware. You can make a friendly suggestion, but making demands (especially over something as trivial as a boot screen) or calling the developer's ego into question is not an appropriate way to behave--in this or any other forum (and I'm speaking to GameDoctor here). Gguru's last posts were perfectly stated. If you don't think PPCGeeks and Helmi deserve a spot on your bootscreen then feel free to remove it--just don't expect or demand that the unpaid and overworked developer do it for you--especially when he already spent long hours implementing that homage in the first place. If you think that a thief is capable of researching here how to change the bootscreen then you should definitely be able to handle it. |

I never said Helmi, or anyone in perticular had an ego. It was a general statement that some, not all, programmers (whoever they may be) have sensitivities. And in this case, it seems to be the pride of the banner makers has been hurt. Damn, some of you are only proving my point by the long tirades. Your banner was well intended, to give thanks to those that deserve credit, to prevent others from taking credit for the development, etc. And to that I fully agree it was a genuine show of thanks. It does however interfear with the feature of a custom boot screen that is in the kitchen. Doesn't placing these credits elsewhere accomplish your original goals of the banner as well as solve requests to make the boot screen a fully user customized option as it was seemingly originally intended? |

Frankly I think I'm being very patient with you by responding at all to your inflammatory posts. I don't intend to continue. Quote:
For gguru to spend even more time de-implementing it for just a few people is a waste of his already constrained time. He has a family life and a day job just like the rest of us and he has already indicated that he likes the banner. If you disagree, well we've already discussed what your options are. |
Minority vote silenced?
Ok. Good point, we might be the 10-20% "minority" of people who would like a no-graffiti option.
Here in the USA, minorities have a vote also. You are not trying to silence the "minority" vote for a small change are you? Some appear to be trying to do this by saying the minority is not grateful because we see an alternative win-win solution. Does that sound like the politics of a repressive regime or an open democratic board? Our votes have been cast, ignore them if you like. I never intended on starting a riot. |
