So wait does that mean that i can reupdate the 3GS with a different ipsw file that has iOS 4 that is not official and then jailbreak that and then unlock it?

yes but only if it is on 3.1.2 or below,

if it has already been updated to iOS4 then the bootrom is now updated and you cannot flash a patched IPSW on it till they release the updated tools to do so.

just curious how do you know that a jailbreak for iOS4 on the 3GS is "coming out very soon" or "any day now"?

I thought it always took longer to make a jailbreak for the 3GS model...or am I incorrect?

it does come later, but with Spirit being out, rednow already JB the 3G and pwnage tool able to JB it on 3.1.2 I honestly just feel like it will be very soon.

Before they were holding on to patches like the 5.12.01 baseband unlock etc... but now its balls to the walls to JB the iPhone 4 and the 3GS and it seems to me it will be there any day now.

its valid only for the old boot rom. to find out your boot rom version go to settings then about. under model number if it says MC you have the new bottom and this will not work. if you did an official ios4 upgrade then you have the new boot rom.
