My WP7 Noob Question Thread
OK, I'm going to start off by just saying; Please forgive me for I know not what I doing. I've searched some and really haven't found a lot of my questions answered in other threads. I'm moving over from WM6.5 and I was only using it for about a year before I was moved over to WP7. Prior to that I was using a PDA w/WM2005/2003/etc/etc/etc.
I am using a new HTC Arrive on the Sprint network just so that you'll know where I'm coming from when I ask. The first one is on the actual OS specs in a way. If I launch a program and then move back to the WM main screen does that actually end the program? I used to have to run to the Task Manager before and actually stop all the other programs or use an aftermarket addon that would actually stop the program when I tapped the "x". I ask because I haven't found a Task manager selection in the options. Thanks in advance. I'm sure I will have many more |
Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
well if u tap the back button when in a program it closes it. however if u hit the start button to go back to the start screen it will only hibernate it in memory. in that case ud simply hit the back button to resume to the app and depending on how the dev has the restore points in the app u can resume back to the point u left off otherwise u start from the beginning. wp7 Nodo only suspends one app in memory while mango supports 5 or more apps sustained in memory and a press and hold of the back button will bring them all up similar to a task manager and to close them u goto each and hit the back button till they exit. aunque the apps are sustained in memory they are actually not running or consuming any RAM or battery so no need to keep going to the task manager to keep apps under control like in WM or Android. hope that was clear enough for u

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
Yeah, Thanks. I didn't know how the TSR worked on the new system. I knew that with the old OS's, they would stay on and, even though according to the Task Manager, they were not using any cycle time, I noticed a significant slow down and drain on battery life compared to making sure things I wasn't using were shut down.

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
OK, A couple of more.
I've read through the user guide and getting started and didn't see anything that really helped me on these. Battery Life %: I'm not a fan of just the battery picture in the top right corner. I'd like something that's a little more informative. %'s or even hours remaining. Tilting the Opening screen: I like how when you tilt the pone, the screen reorients itself. But, It doesn't seem to do that with the opening screen or many of the other HTC/WP7 screen that are inherent to the OS. Ex: When I go into Marketplace and scroll through the programs and such, I've noticed that teh information and sometimes even the title of the program itself is cut off on the right hand side. It doesn't matter if I tilt it or slide the keyboard out, it doesn't reorient the screen for a larger, sideways view. Many of the other areas of the phone do this also. Am I not setting something right or is this an option the OS programmers left out in these areas? I read in the manuals many times where it talks about teh tilt feature and notes that many/some other programs may not take advantage of this. I would assume the OS/programs would not be in this category. Thanks again for helping me learn this new system. There's a couple of other things I can't readily think of at the moment. A lot of them are only things I think of when I'm actually using the phone and don't remember later on when I'm typing this stuff. |
Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
OK, Another one:
WiFi on a hidden Network: Where I work, the WiFi is a hidden network. In WM, I had to actually type in the name of the Network and the PW in order to tie into it with my PDA/Smartphone. Now, with WP7, I turn on the Wireless and it searches but does not find any network. Is there a way for me to go into the WiFi control and enter this information? Thanks |

I'll try to answer some of your questions...battery icon can't be changed on stock, not sure if unlocked devices can change that. Search the marketplace for an app called "hidden wifi"...the only thing is once you launch it, you will get an error message saying you have to upgrade to the newest software, when that happens, just hit the start button (middle button at the bottom), then hit the back bautton (arrow key) and it will launch and you can then add the wifi settings. Only certain apps will switch to landscape mode, but the home screen isn't one of them. If you need more help, just holler! |
Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
apps that require typing will rotate usually except for the FB app for some reason but I don't really use that to type in. and as for the battery % there is an option in mango that reveals all of that for u. mango also has the native ability to connect to hidden WiFi networks ,HTC did have an app for it but the last time I checked the market it wasn't downloadable.

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
OK, thanks for the info. I found a few links today talking about the Hidden WiFi program but I've not been able to find it. Maybe they took it off the sites.
When's the actual release date is tentatively slated? |
Yeah, I checked the market and they pulled hidden WiFi...but mine still works...weird.

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
Here's the response I got yesterday from HTC:
"Dear John McD, I understand the importance of having the Hidden Wi-Fi application for your HTC Arrive. The application in question was found to be unsecure when connecting to Hidden Wi-Fi networks. The application may be available in the future; however, I cannot guarantee it. I do apologize for any inconvenience. To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Sincerely, Jeffery HTC Want to see what others are saying? Have a question to ask other HTC fans?" So is there a way that someone can send that file or is it locked to the phone? That's actually another questions I've got: Storing and installing programs: With the previous Windows Mobil systems, I could always store and keep my programs on my home PC and remove/reinstall at my whim. So far, the only thing I've been dealing with has been the Marketplace. Is there a way to sav the files on my home PC and how would I install/ reinstall them as I did before? |

1) if u install the apps from the Zune application on ur PC the Zune will save the apps into a temp folder and will reinstall them in the matter of a hard reset. if u use the marketplace on the phone u have to remember them all and manually reinstall them. 2) it requires an unlocked phone, either by being a dev or the chevron solution ($9) |

Ok, so I guess its setup that way to help prevent piracy. I can respect that. I was just hoping it wouldn't be that hard for someone with a program like htc's Hidden WiFi to send it out. Just my luck, I get a new(advanced)phone and it doesn't have many of the features my previous one did. Hopefully the option will be back out there so I can get back on my companies inter/intranet servers. |

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
Thanks Doc. I really appreciate the effort.
If/When Mango comes out in the next 60 days I'm OK with waiting for that. The only problem I see is how will it be released? Kinda another Noob Question but: When the OS is released, will I still have to wait for Sprint to add whatever they add like with WM when it went from WM6/6.1 to 6.5? Or, is it more like a regular Desktop OS now where they release the OS and then the phone company just adds whatever they do over their network regardless. |

honestly, wp7 was released naked, and they're adding things now. today, microsoft gave it to the manufactures, so it shouldn't be long. they are also going to make windows 8 on the pc to have a metro feel, so hopefully we will get that ppc feel back. |
Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
Here's Another one.
RingTones: I've looked through the online guide, even read through a book I found, one of those For Dummies types, and didn't see anything. Is there a way to install new ring tones or are we stuck with the Pixie Dust adn Unicorns styles on the phone? Thanks again as always |

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
OK, so it's another one of those things that will be addressed with Mango. No wonder everyone is getting onto the Developer list. It's really hard to believe that MS put out such a limited OS for it's opening shot at reintroducing the Smartphones to the market.

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
yea, gotta start somewhere tho. android and iOS were released this way too (if not worse)

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
Has Microsoft updated the youtube app for WP7 or does it have plans to do so in the near future ? Last i heard, Google was withholding some APIs for youtube and Microsoft complained in Europe.

Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
This may seem like a stupid question but bear with me in that I'm just moving over from WP7 and having been with WM since CE.
The newer 7.5(Mango) OS: Will the current batch of WP apps work without issue, other than the possible lack of multi-tasking ability? Just wondering out loud on this one since I've read about people writing programs for Mango, or Marketplace not accepting Mango apps just yet, etc. |
Re: My WP7 Noob Question Thread
all apps will continue to work the same way they did before mango if they haven't been updated.
