Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!

Windows Mobile 7 to be Zune + Phone? File under: News By: Brandon Miniman | Date: 19-Jan-10 | 0 Comments http://pocketnow.com/html/portal/new...155//zuney.jpg Get ready for more rumors about Windows Mobile 7, this time from MobileCrunch. This time, the rumor is that Windows Mobile 7 will be a very close cousin of the Zune HD in more ways than one. To start, it will run off of the Zune HD kernel. Then, Microsoft will delegate to manufacturers the minimum screen size (which seems strange to us) and hardware specifications that will be required to run Windows Mobile 7. The article goes on: The UI looks just like the Zune HD’s with some phone controls built-in. The HD has defined the interface and the use case here, so expect a capacitive multi-touch screen with plenty of media controls. Now for the nuts and bolts: WinMo 7 has no background processing and will use an Apple-like notification service. There is no system resource access and no threaded processes. In fact, there is no customization at all. WinMo 7 will not run 6.x code. End of story. It is based on Silverlight and .Net. Everything save a few basic programs will not work under WinMo 7. There is no expectation that this will be a “business device” and the focus is currently on games including some XBox Live functionality for gaming and messaging. There will be a Microsoft App store with an easy approval process. We've heard rumors that the interface of WinMo 7 would be similar to the Zune HD, but not "just like" as this article implies. We also know (and believe) that Windows Mobile 7 won't feature native application compatibility with 6.x devices, which could shake up the developer community (although some may be excited to have a fresh start). Either way, what's mentioned above represents rumors that can be filed under the "lofty" column, but given the success of the Zune HDhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif, it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could come to fruition. Having trouble keeping up with all of the Windows Mobilehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif 7 rumors? Bookmark this page. Thanks for the tip, Jan. Not sure if I like this or not. I think Microsoft abandoning the 6.xx format is good. However giving the device no compatibility to 6.xx programs is gonna be a major mistake. Windows Mobile 7 should be a totally redesigned OS with alot of upgrades. I think the Zune features should just be and option, like and App you can add to handle your music, media and marketplace. I think what they are trying to do is make WM7 more like the iPhone. Which is really gonna piss off core WM fans. WM7 should not be a "featrue phone" like the iPhone. It needs to focus on business fuctions as it alwasy has, so it can compete with BB and Nokia devices. Having the Zune features as an options would make it compete with the iPhone as well. Are tehy not realizing that Apple is now constantly addind features to try and make the iPhone more business friendly? Why would MS go inthe opposite direction? |

I would love the see the Zune HD software on the Touch HD2

Re: Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!
This basically means the death of custom ROMs for WinMo more than likely, which will just cement my transition over to Android.

How does this mean the end of custm ROMs? I don't see where you guys are getting that from.
What I found troubling was the "no background processes" tidbit. I hope that doesn't mean no multi-tasking. I will likely be heading to the Android platform with everyone else if there is no multi-tasking... |

Re: Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!
This is an old post. It was posted well before we learned alot more info on WinMo, more over, the guy posting it had no proof of anything. Just speculation and horrible one at that.
WinMo7 still has obligations to alot of companies that will use this platform for business use. Something like 7 of the top 10 companies in united states has a large mobile platform based on winmo, and these won't work with those obligations, end of story there. Once WinMo 7 comes out or we know facts, I'm going to post to this guy and call him a retard :) |

Apple format is has an OS that is stable. Add apps... There you are customized.
M$ moving to the same format is good and bad. Good- Less frustration adding app favorites, connectivity, and it should just plain work Bad- lack of custom input and ROMs, No 6.5 WM programs, ??? Its like taking the smart phone and dumbing it down. I guess M$ is looking forward to the APP market to make a profit like Apple. Android is sounding better and better..... |
Re: Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!
Where are you guys getting that there won't be any custom ROMs? I keep seeing people say that, but I have no idea where they are getting that from.

Even the most locked down platforms of all- Blackberry and iPhone, could have custom ROMs if the community felt like putting in the work. |

Re: Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!
How hackable is the Zune right now? It also runs on silverlight and .net.
Hell, how hackable is a Samsung WinMo phone for that matter? It's one company that makes WinMo phones that's let this community thrive. HTC. Look at the upcoming amount of Android phones HTC is putting out, compared to WinMo. That alone should serve as some sort of gauge. I think WinMo is finally dying, and it makes me very sad, as I've had WinMo forever, but I just don't see 7 being anything like the previous versions, hacking included. |

Samsung phones are very much hackable though and people flash cooked ROMs to their Samsung Windows Mobile phones. Don't think for a second it is limited to HTC phones, it's not. |

zune hd rom was dumped months ago but because our current tools can't do much (core is different) time is what it will take...

Re: Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!
I'm definitely liking Android better than the current WM, but if WM7 is good (as I hope it will be) I would probably come back to WM. I also think the Zune interface would be good. There would most likely be modifications available. Even the iPhone is hackable and Apple tries pretty hard to keep that from happening.

I probaly move to android in future only because thats the new open source OS. If anyone thinks people will like the phone so much they dont want to customize it , is insane LoL.

Re: Windows Mobile 7 to ressemble the Zune HD!
Remember when they said Nintendo and Palm were dead? LOL! WM IS Not Dead! WM7 connectivity to Live is gonna be hot if they do it right. They need to use their Success with XBOX360 and Win7 as a way to slingshot WinMo7 into a success. I think they can do it. They are basing the phone on Silverlight which can only mean good things to come.
