I'm a linux user... I use opensuse 11.1 (w/ kde4). I was a big pclinuxos guy, but their releases are tooo sloooowwww (I like my OS like I like my roms, the latest and greatest/unstable :) )

On my dvr I use mythbuntu (ubuntu), I'm usually not an ubuntu guy but for server/dvr/stuff like that I use ubuntu b/c the guides are so good.

does anyone know of a way to flash roms etc from Linux?

There is a software for debian based systems (you can also compile it for other systems) that allows you to flash in linux. It was made by pof from xda-developers.com
You can also flash most phones WITHOUT a computer using your SD card.
