unlocked + aGPS might be bad combo...

A great point has been made here about a possibly bad side-affect of having aGPS turned on.. As quoted from the article...

Quote:

If you're using an unlocked device or an otherwise non-carrier-supported device, it's a good bet that turning on aGPS is going to lengthen your acquisition time as the assisted part of it tries (and fails) to get location information from the local tower.
So if you have an unlocked phone, it might be a good idea to turn aGPS off.. I believe a registry edit will do the trick.. For an expanded read of this possible problem, go here...

ahh, good times, sitting around x-mas eve, playing with ppc gps... ;)
wanted to note that the linked article is for the touch HD, and therefore GSM. also unlocked refers to the fact your using the phone on a different carrier, so if the carrier supports aGPS, and you properly change the server addy/ect.. you should be fine.

on a side note, I prefer my mogul on GSP vs. aGPS for a few reasons.
if aGPS is enabled, the qualcomm will look there first (timeouts apply) then goes to the internal readings.
if on a phone call, the chip can't access agps data, therefore you have extra timeout time to wait before it can get a fix
using live search or google maps ect..(online) the lock does seem flaky with agps and will sometimes confuse the phone/app and generate odd notifications like "you must end the call before going online" (something like that, can't remember) even though you don't have a call going (me thinks aGPS has a connection that doesn't register as EV/1x data, but still ties up the line/radio)

anyway thanks for the other links, and I'm sure your minions will find this info helpful too.

haha Shaggy.. When I get on a computer I will update the OP to include that unlocked info.. I think this would apply to both GSM and CDMA though.. That HD is GSM, but aGPS is used on both..

the op did mention that properly configured on a carrier with aGPS it should work.
I just wanted to make it clear for the cdma users that simply having an unlocked phone/rom doen't matter, just when changing from the original carrier, gsm or cdma.

so agps for the touch pro sprint, good or bad? on or off? what's the verdict?

you decide. either works pretty well on Sprint. I keep a reg file of each way so I can quickly change it when/if I need to. I personally prefer to keep it on standalone (aGPS=off), but there are times I enable it for faster locks.

All of the GPS discussions regarding the TP/Raphael/Fuze seem to agree that turning aGPS off is preferred -- apparently as noted above because the system will initially try to poll the cell towers rather than the satellites and this causes time out issues. I found it definitely works better with it off. As for how to do it, Advanced Config has a setting for it for those who don't want to deal with reg edits.

So this is good or bad advice?

I think it was a good discussion, but I can't advise turning off aGPS on your grandma's ppc... :p

if we don't use the service, we could loose it.. feels nice to make other carriers users jealous.

;;I would recommend geeks try with aGPS off for a while though.. just depends on how concerned you are with a fast lock. me not so much, I know where I AM, just need to know WHERE to go.
