Phone Function Does not work - Effect other features??
 

I just got this off ebay, haven't recieved it in the mail quite yet but i had a question that maby someone here could help me with.

The seller says that the phone function does not work. Would this affect anything else on the phone besides the fact that you can't use the cell service? I don't really need the phone functionality of it wich is why i bought it, i just need a portable organizer.

Does anyone have a clue why it would work fine and then the phone functionality would quit? Has anyone else had this issue with this phone? I'm hopeing its something stupid that could be fixed via software configuration of software update, but then again i've never had a ppc so im not sure what im talking about.

Any help would be greatly appriciated :)

Everything on the phone should still work.. You are right.. You will not be able to make phone calls or use a cellular data plan.. You are basically buying a high-tech PDA..You can use Wi-Fi for internet.. A possible reason for phone functionality is a broken cellular Radio, which connects to the cellular network.. Also, it could be a software issue as you say.. He might have incorrectly flashed the phone to a bad ROM.. That would make the phone function not work correctly by not enabling it to connect to the cellular network.. I have never personally had this issue.. But I have had it where my phone plan was turned off on my 6800, yet I could still use it fully (except to call and text).. Once you get the phone, ask in here about how to try to troubleshoot the cellular issue..

it could be a bad esn, and that's why it's advertised without phone capability

this is a noob question, and maby it should be asked elsewhere. I'm not too good on the phone lingo.. esn is electronic serial number right? how can it be bad?

EDIT:

I think i just found the answer to my question. A bad esn just means its a phone that someone has a large past-due bill on so therefore anyone that acquires it can't use the cell service? Is there any way to get around this? (or at least any way that i won't get in trouble for on this forum for asking about?)

Yes, that is a good possibility for an ESN to be "bad". Another could be that the phone has been reported lost/stolen. The best thing to do in your situation is to call the provider and inquire about the ESN. Simply be honest with them and tell them you purchased the phone on Ebay and want to see if you can use it. Check back here after you've done some research on it and we'll be able to help you further then.
