what phones can work on what networks?
 

can some knowledgeable individual please point me to a list of what phones can work on a specific network. i dont mean a model of a phone but what carriers phones are compatible. like:
Alltel phones will work on: verizon, sprint
verizon phone will work on: alltel, sprint
att phones will work on tmobile,sprint

this is just an example of the info im looking for. i just made it up to explain what im looking for.

verizon
alltel
sprint
tmobile
cricket
bell

There's two networks: CDMA and GSM. A phone with a CDMA radio should work on any CDMA network. The trick is getting a provider to let you use a phone on their network that they didn't sell you. For instance, you sign up for a contract with Sprint, buy a phone (CDMA) and then want to switch to Verizon or Alltel. Since Verizon and Alltel are CDMA you should be able to use the phone you bought from Sprint on either of their networks, but since you didn't buy your phone from Verizon or Alltel they probably won't activate for you.

so there are only 2 "large" gsm carriers in us?

does this mean imported phones will work on these networks?
does the imported phone need to work on specific band? (thought i saw something about 850mhz or something)
do all gsm phones use simm cards?

yes imported GSM phones will work and yes all gsm phones use sincards but not the cdma phones dont use simcard and that has to be a us version of the phone

you do need to be careful on what phones you import because of the frequencies. yes they will all work in terms of voice service but there are some phones that don't have the frequency the U.S. carriers use for 3G so your data services are shot

thanks guys. i am always seeing posts in here about, "will my sprint phone work on verizon?" and similar, and just wanted to get this figured out once and for all. i want to get that Sony Ericson xperia x1, and wanted to know if it was possible to get it to work on any other network other then att. looks like i can not.

is it right to say, that in the us, data is slower on gsm than on cdma? or that on gsm, there is less high speed data coverage?

i think its more on the coverage and where you're at. for example, on the coasts at&t's 3G will beat Sprint's Power Vision but in Utah, no one comes close to Sprint but i'm sure that's just dependent on what resources the carrier has chosen to implement in an area

In 2003, my ex-colleague and dear friend was invited to join in this new vision. I launched eight locations in Northern California and I was invited to launch new locations in Arizona, Colorado, and Minnesota. In 2005, when the merger with Sprint occurred, the new management team: Mark Sadighian, Paul Harris, and Dennis McSweeney no longer shared the vision that Nextel had with my company. At the same time I found out that my partner was embezzling money and started a new wireless company with another carrier. When I approached Mark Sadighian with my new found news, the advise that I received was to separate our partnership and for me to start a new company under a new name. Two months into my new company, I submitted six new retail locations that were denied to me for expansion, but at the same time were handed to someone else. Sprint/Nextel set me up for failure, after I invested hundred of thousands of dollars into the new company. Sprint/Nextel decided at that point not to support me in my visions, ideas, and ventures. As a result, I am seeking other dealers that have had a similar experience as me for a class action lawsuit. Before I posted my story online, I requested the immediate assistance from the CEO of Sprint, Daniel Hesse. He never responded to any of my emails, and at this point left me with no choice, but to put together a class action lawsuit for Authorized Dealers. I will not stop until my losses are compensated.
