GPS on LG Fathom?
I can't for the life of me get GPS working on my LG fathom. I used iGO8 on my touch pro, which worked flawlessly, and after screwing around with settings for a couple hours to get it working on the Fathom, the program can't seem to find the internal GPS.

Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
hey i just got the lg fathom(in fact typing from it right now) and i spent a few hours today trying to get GPS working. I actually saw your post before when searching how to get it to work. I finally figured it out.
First you have to make sure that your GPS is turned on to "Location on" through the gps setting under cdma services under phone (accessible throuugh options through dialpad) Then you have to set the gps com port under settings > system > external gps to com4 (com9 and 3 and com1 don't work, one of them is for bluetooth, and not sure about the others) that should be everything you need to get gps working, Now i'm trying to get quick gps working but get the error when loading blah bla blha signed drivers this works for me with gmaps set to managed and gpsviewer can open com4 and give location stats |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
I had no problems at all with getting GPS to "work right out of the box" on my Fathom, other than the mentioned need to turn "Location On", which is something you need to do with most phones. Google Maps works. Bing works. Just slowwwwwwww to get first lock.
I, too, am now trying to get QuickGPS working. I have the latest (2010?) SDK Certificates loaded, but I still get an error msg about it being unsigned. Tried copying the modified QuickGPS.exe into the Windows directory. Tried the registry edit/tweek. ](*,) |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
After "LOCATION_ON" in Phone options
External GPS in settings is set to port "GPD 9", managed by windows Google maps works find, first lock waited more than 5 minutes. |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Anyone ever get Igo8 to work on the LG Fathom?
|
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Bahahhaha, it took me 3 days of non-stop research but I figured it out:
Add this to sys.txt: [device] type="SGH-i900" It now works with the Fathom! Hilarious but it works :D |

Seems it needs to know that one has a non-HTC WinMobile phone. |

Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Subject change time since I managed to solve the OP's problem :)
Any chance in hell we'll ever get a custom ROM for this phone? I don't know why this phone isn't more popular around here. I went from a Touch Pro 2 to this and I can't believe how much more I love this phone. It feels like it's built like a tank, it's way nicer looking in person than in pics, and the speed is absolutely incredible. Only thing that sucks is the horrible Arcsoft SMS stuff they make you use when I'd rather use the native Windows Mobile one. Is there any reason there's no custom ROMs for this phone? Impossible to unlock perhaps? Or just so unpopular no one is going to bother? I'll tell you what, this is THE phone to have if you are a Verizon customer and are sticking with Windows Mobile 6 and refusing to go to 7 (like I am). Just wondering why no hacking is being done to it. |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
I keep wondering that too. Seems to be very little love out there for this phone.

Luckily, there's very little bloat on this phone. The Arcsoft software kinda blows but at least the phone is so fast that there's literally no lag when reading SMS's. Hell, there's no lag when I open up Igo8! This phone is BLAZING! |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Here's a weird one:
GoogleMaps, VZnavigator, Bing all work fine with the GPS and regular settings. However, I don't wish to rely on data connections, so I prefer installing Tomtom, which has worked fine on my previous WMobile devices. On the Fathom, it does not find a gps connection with a gps launcher or even when primed with Googlemaps. Even weirder: every time I install tomtom, it ruins bluetooth on my phone until I do a hard reset. The bluetooth in wireless manager disappears, and when I try to open the settings manually it says, "btmanager.exe is not a valid pocket pc application". Why is GPS so much harder to utilize on this damn phone? Anyone tried software such as Tomtom, Garmin, etc, and got it to work? Suggestions? Thanks. |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
From what I have been able to ascertain, the Fathom's GPS hardware is not connected thru a serial com port (as it is in many other phones). Therefore, one can't access it by setting an app to a com port number. Instead, one is "stuck" with only being able to access the GPS hardware thru the LG provided windows driver. I have a couple of older GPS apps that only offer com port numbers as setup options, and therefore I can't use them on my Fathom.
I am going to venture a guess that with Tom Tom, if it can't find any GPS hardware sitting behind a com port, it attempts to connect to an external GPS "puck" thru bluetooth. |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
On that note, does anyone know of 3rd party gps software that DOES WORK on this phone, preferably without requiring a data connection?
I'm beginning to regret purchasing this phone, but I do like sleek WM and the small size to the thing. |

I just love showing former WM users, who switched to 'Droid, that my WM phone with a 1G processor is just as fast as their new 'Droid. |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Internet Explorer is the browser pre-installed on the LG Fathom, but there are other options via the Marketplace. Navigating Web sites has sometimes been a frustrating experience. Try to click on a link of cause the page to go, but it's probably the fault rather than touch screen implementation. As mentioned, there is no support multi-touch: tap twice in a place that some zoom capabilities, but Fathom does not display an entire Web page, unless the site is part of the resolution screen.

I tried that sys.txt edit and my Fathom still won't find GPS with IGo8. Funny that Google Maps works great and GPSTest works great. Also Live Search made me download Bing, and now it won't lock. TomTom 6 runs in tiled mode (three times in one window). I am running the v7 update. Oct.-10-2010. Have you updated beyond v4? That's what mine came with from vzw last week. I might run the tool again and use the v5 cab file this time. I sure hope more Fathom users jump in with some feedback. Also, check out the new Fathom thread. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/lg-fathom/?daysprune= PPCGeeks, a step ahead.... |
Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Hey guys,
I have the Fathom with V7 update (flashed via the update tool). I can get the GPS to work with Google Maps without meddling with any settings. QuickGPS allows for a faster lock (about 1 minute 30 seconds). However, I cannot get it to work with the Garmin Mobile XT: it just says "GPS Intermediate Driver" and the bars showing reception are blank... Has anyone else had success? And also for the noob...where is the sys.txt file? Is it only for the iGO? Thanks |

Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
For gps to work on the Garmin XT, set program port to GPD9 and set hardware port to COM4. Mine is working with those changes.

Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
I just (unsuccessfully) installed TomTom 7.915 on the LG Fathom, it was working fine on my old HTC Tilt. The installation itself went fine, but TomTom can't see the GPS no matter what setting I pick on the phone or the program itself. Google maps works okay so the GPS on the phone is working.... I'll keep trying and will report back if I find something interesting. Thank you.

Re: GPS on LG Fathom?
Hi,
After many attempts I have TomTom working on the LG Fathom phone, I wasn't able to find an ideal solution but at least it is working. The key is to launch Franson GpsGate before the TomTom Navigator application. I'm using GpsGate 2.6.0.41 and TomTom 7.916. On GpsGate I selected Input COM2 (this has to match your settings\system\External GPS\GPS program port) and then on the active output port I have GpsGate Direct and Virtual COM4. On TomTom I have selected Other NMEA GPS, 9600 bauds and Franson COM4. Bad news is that GpsGate is NOT freeware so if you find an equivalent free utility please let us know (BTW, I tried several similar applications but no luck making them work as expected). Hope this helps. |

Now about your problem. The solution is very easy, just install Microsoft NeT CF 3.7.cab and all go right. Bye |
