WM 6.5 and Windows key

I recall that when MS was discussing upgrades from 6.1-->6.5 they said one requirement was a windows key. A friend of mine got a Samsung Omnia 2 (HSPA Bell Mobility) and although it came with WM 6.5, there is no dedicated windows key. What's up with that?

It sounds like they were making things up, or confusing Windows Mobile 6.1->6.5 with Windows Vista to Windows 7.

Windows Vista is actually numbered as Windows 6. Windows Vista Service pack one would have a build number of 6100.

You don't' need a key from Windows for the upgrade. There is no real activation in Windows Mobile.

You may need a key from the carrier to preform the upgrade, so they can make you go into the store, but I've done many upgrades and there's no key needed.

I was talking about a hardware key, not a serial.
