Recommended APPS

New Android user here (HTC Droid Eris).
What are some recommended apps a Winmo convert would need?
(Not looking to hack, cook a ROM, or root.... yet).

Specifically:

a) a good media player (that has plenty of codecs to play all types of vids)
- flash support? (For Flash videos)

b) a good file explorer (I've used a few crappy ones so far)

c) a good task manger (though I hear that's unnecessary)

d) A better image browser (in my winmo ays, I used the Resco suite religiously)

Re: Recommended APPS

a. Meridian - the best up and coming player I've tried
b. ASTRO - tried a bunch, and this one is feature rich, play around to get the hang of it
c. Not necessary at all but if you need the peace of mind try TaskPanel
d. I'm content with the default viewer but try PhotoViewer or Picture Viewer both are free in the app store. I'm sure there are more to try.

Thanks... this is a good start.
So many apps to choose from... if only Resco would release apps for Android. :)

Hmmm..... first fault. Meridian won't scale down videos too large in resolution.
Erggg....

Are there any "screen lock" programs that can be used to lock the screen during a call. Something that is simply to bypass (a two location press combo to unlock the screen)?

My friend has the Samsung Moment Android phone and she keeps hanging up on people with her face while she is on the phone.

So glad the Eris has the proximity sensor to handle that.

Supposedly my friend's Samsung Moment is supposed to have a proximity sensor, but it isn't working. Her screen stays on when she is on the phone and she hangs up on people all the time with her face. (she tried putting her Home screen on when she is on the phone but then her home screen gets all screwed up by her face... she's not hitting the end hardware button...it's the screen hangup)

Anyone know of a site for non-Market apps?

I'm not aware of any sites that aggregate non-market apps. Android doesn't suffer from the bizarre app approval rules/process that apple practices.

I'm not running crap for Facebook. I use the internet browser, and go to the FULL site, not the crappy mobile site. I've found through great research that all of the other various methods of accessing Facebook result in PARTIAL results (not seeing all the updates, News Feed, etc...). This really has been pissing me off.

I use http://touch.facebook.com and have been very satisfied with the new touch/smartphone interface.

I guarantee that if you compare results from http://touch.facebook.com and the full site, you'll see differences. Very aggravating.

My personal list of recommended and frequently used apps:
Facebook: Full site, or Bloo for quick access
Streaming Music: Pandora Radio, Last.fm and Slacker
Movies: Lukluk
Navigation (Until 2.1 update): Waze
Ringtones: Mabilo or Zedge
Cards: FunTowers (A.K.A. Tri-peaks)

I'm still looking for more, and better apps. But these are all free and all work great so far.

IS there an app that lets you remote control your phone from the PC?

(There were tons for WinMo devices, I can't find even 1 for Android).
