Need Opinion on Nook Tablet for a Cheap Android Tab

My wife was asking me today about the possibility of getting a Nook Tablet and how it would compare to a regular Tablet for what we want. WE want it to use as a reader for our son so he can use the WiFi/Browser to go onto his educational sites he uses for reading help and also use the built in Microphone to record his readings so his teacher can also hear him read at home.

I'm puzzled though just how much of an Android tablet the Nook Tablet is. Also, from what I've read, the "marketplace" for the Nook is only the B&N Market. With them closing down so many stores and such, I'm hesitant to put money into something that might just go away.

So how is the Nook for a beginners Tablet? Anything or any other items I should perhaps look at in the same price range give or take $50

Thanks
