This is pissing me off...

I rarely post but this is ridiculous.

In today's age of 1Ghz processors on cell phones and the multitude of other things that phones are capable of, it just baffles me that Google, Microsoft, and other OS makers can't see the frustration that power users have with random applications starting up.....and applications not closing when you ask them to. Excuse my ignorance but when I manually kill an app on my pc, it won't restart unless it's a virus of some sort. I just don't get why it's so ****ing hard just accomplish this simple task. Stop trying to impress me with screen sizes, processor speed, ram, and all the other "phone candy" that I can't use because my battery is dying faster than it should. I can't be the only one frustrated by this. It's 2010 and companies that make OS's can't fix this simple problem. It's just not logical. I read in another thread that Froyo will use applications when it needs to and shut them down when they done. I call bull****. I see no reason for Amazon mp3, Sprint Navigation, and Shop Savvy to be running on my phone while I'm sitting at my desk at work.

I heard that Startup Auditor did a fairly good job and helping control applications' rogue behavior. What is working for you guys?

I love my Evo but damn Google....fix this obvious problem in Gingerbread, Hostess Cream, Sugar Lips, or whatever else you brand your next OS. I left my TP2 for Evo thinking Google would do it the "right" way. I'm impressed by what I've seen but closing an app and keeping it closed, disable random apps from starting on their own like viruses, and memory management should be as simple as "cut and paste". Maybe hire some people from XDA. We as users know what we works and what doesn't. Find out what's ***ed up and fix it. It's that simple.

Honestly you are comparing apples to oranges here, memory management it Android is COMPLETELY different from Windows Mobile. There is no reason at all to have a task killer on Android, the programs start back up because either the OS needs it or you are using it, simple as that. I have Froyo and I am getting a solid day out of my battery, without issues, and I am a pretty heavy user.

You ever stop to think that you are the problem and not the OS? Everyone else seems to be getting along fine.

EDIT
Also if you don't like those extra apps that Sprint puts on there, root your phone and put a custom OS on it.

Lmao, but i hear u man, I use Advanced task killer an set Auto-kill to aggressive. if u also utilize the Ignore feature for apps u dont want closed it works pretty well

While I'm not too concerned about these apps that start up randomly, they shouldn't start up to begin with. If I receive a phone call, why would the text messaging app start? Why would Sprint navigation start? Uninstalling an app isn't the answer.

This is you having too much time and looking into things that shouldn't concern you.

Do me a favor go onto your windows machine and try killing svchosts or system or even services. It won't let you, weather you agree or not Android has all of these process open at once and that is how it is run. Very similar to Linux.

Read this:

http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-b...-with-android/

gaudet41 08-05-2010 09:32 AM

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; PC36100 Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

Seriously people need to do their research on Android before they rant. There is a reason a task killer doesn't come preinstalled, it is unnecessary. The apps you see in there ate not really running and they take up no usable memory or battery life. I know it is a difficult concept coming from shitty Windows mobile but Android is way different. Go research.

Re: This is pissing me off...

+1 Now that was an entertaining rant. Here's to backing up your view...maybe this goes in to Google's Android suggestion box for the Sugar Lips 2.3 team.

What the OP is saying is an "APP" is a program that we as the user call on to do something we want, when we want it to. If it can be installed or un-installed and the OS is not affected than it does not need to start and run on it's own. The whole Linux to Windows operation apples oranges thing, ok, I get it ( not really) but referencing killing needed services and the Windows shell desktop gui whatever is not the same as just a user APP or specific program executed. If I don't want Skype running I close it. Maybe there are certain parts of it still running but from my end the program listed as Skype will be off and not start back up again until I choose to run it. And thus I have more free resources to use for other things. Even if the OS would do that for me to keep my game running smooth I still get to make the choice.

These programs, for all we know, start up on their own because they are used for a data mining/advertising agenda when they can. Have you guys read all the accesses granted to a lot of the programs we use? I would love to really know what kind of personal data is beaming from my phone all day. I like the fun and convenience of the tech so I don't really care though, if that is happening, as long as I am not affected by it anyway.

Re: This is pissing me off...

First, I understand your frustration. That said, if you really want to resolve the issue (for now and within your control), do this:

1. Root (full with NAND unlocked).
2. Install a custom ROM (or not, this one is optional).
3. Install autokiller (free in Market but REQUIRES root) and choose the preset Agressive or Extreme.
4. Buy and install SetCPU from the Market (REQUIRES root) and create a new profile for screen off = 246 MHz).

Then sit back and enjoy your EVO with moderate to heavy usage for 24+ hours on a single charge. I have done all this (and run the latest Fresh ROM) and I love my EVO.

Re: This is pissing me off...

Hey rainfreak, thanks for the tip on extending the battery life. How much of a pain is it to set up both of those programs? Why autokiller vs advanced task killer (I think the r child one) so many are using? 24 hrs seems like a long shot with moderate to heavy use but it sounds great to me if I can even come close to half of that.

Re: This is pissing me off...

this was Quite amusing. Task killer stays on my device. I've noticed a difference in battery life an overall device speed on both the moment and Evo b4 an after installing a TK... until ATK causes my phone to explode or melt in my hand it will continue to work for me.... Im well aware of how "android runs" but hey thats my preference.

@Rainfreak im gonna try that as well cus 2.2 is killin me

Will7272 08-05-2010 11:23 AM

Re: This is pissing me off...

I will work on finding a rom, rooting, and moving forward with this. I guess what upsets me is that "We" as users, shouldn't have to root, flash roms, and other things so apps behave correctly. I just wish that these companies that develop the OS's "listen" to it's user base. I know they read PPCGeeks, XDA, and others. They should begin listening more. Android is a relatively new OS for phones and there's still a lot of tweaking to do...but I hope companies provide the resources to handle basic issues that plague power users every day. If you make the power user happy, Joe Shmoe will be happy.

I know a lot about how Android works. That's not the point. The point is that the way Android is working is not as efficient as it should be at this stage....period. Microsoft hinting that it could release it's first set of Windows 7 phones without the ability to cut and paste is ridiculous. Apple got blasted for not including this in their first round of iBricks. Being innovative with technology while not taking care of the basics that people have been used to over the years, only sets you up for a disappointed user base. I would continue but I told OMJ I'd be nice.

It's very easy to setup those apps, takes me maybe 2-3 minutes for both. If you want to go that route, let me know, and I can put up some screenshots and directions on how I do it.

I prefer autokiller over ATK because it runs better and more efficient, with less of a memory footprint, IMHO. I used ATK on my Moment and then my Hero, which is where I learned about autokiller. The difference I saw on my Hero was night and day between the two.

Same goes for you, I can put screenshots up of my config if you want/need them.

He is not the only one NOT getting a solid day out the battery on the Evo. I also have random apps starting up on their own. I also hate it when my finger does not touch the search button but search comes up in whatever application I am in. Really a bummer. But again, it is fast.

rainfreak 08-05-2010 01:04 PM

Re: This is pissing me off...

Ok, here it is:

Download and install autokiller from the Market (free). Open it and grant it superuser access (always). Click on Menu -> Presets and you will see this screen:

http://rainfreak.com/images/other/screens/auto2.png

I use Extreme but Aggressive does as, too. Choose one of those and then you will be back to the main screen:

http://rainfreak.com/images/other/screens/auto1.png

Click the Apply button and you are good to go. By default, Autokiller loads up on boot, so restarting your EVO won't cause you issues.

rainfreak 08-05-2010 01:10 PM

Re: This is pissing me off...

Next, buy SetCPU from the Market ($1.99) and install it. Then open it, grant it superuser access (always) and let it automatically detect your settings. After that, click on the Profiles tab at the top then click on Add Profile. You will see this screen:

http://rainfreak.com/images/other/screens/setcpu3.png

Set it up like in the screen shot (condition, max, min, governor and priority) and click the Save button. You will then be back to the Profiles tab, which will show your new profile:

http://rainfreak.com/images/other/screens/setcpu2.png

Click back to the Main tab and ensure that scaling is set to ondemand (default) and check the box for Set on Boot. You are now good to go with SetCPU.

Here is a screenshot of my battery level for today. I unplugged my EVO at 6:45am today and have not charged it at all. I have made a few phone calls, sent some texts, installed a few apps/games, surfed the web, and generally played around a little. I only plugged in for a few seconds to grab the screenshots, that is it.

Re: This is pissing me off...

Personally I include ATK in my ROMs just for the fact if I want to kill apps I can. I do understand Googles standpoint on task management, but I don't understand why on a fresh boot, it's compelled to launch all the apps that it does...sure if the app is part of Sense, I understand, but cmon foorprints, news, stocks, Qik, FM Radio? not to mention the extra apps I included in the rom or installed after, they dont need to autolaunch unless I need them to.

ATK just gives me that control :)

Here's a good article that was just sent to me...Thx Vancer!

I appreciate this thread, I have bought setcpu (yeah I know I coulda got it for free from XDA) and setup autokiller. My battery was only good for about 10 or so hours , 8 of those hours being at work and it sitting on top of my work pc. Hopefully this does the trick for me.

If you're rooted, I don't know why someone would not have SetCPU installed with the instructions that Rainfreak posted. It saves soooo much battery life, it's unreal. I have not installed a task killer in any way after flashing.

I pleaded with OMJ to not close this thread after I started with my "intelligent discussion". I refuse to call it a rant :drunken: . Good things can result from frustration expressed to intelligent and patient people. Thanks OMJ, Rainfreak, Carla. :headbang:
