The HTC Supersonic

Some time ago we reported about a list of devices that had been leaked on the Internet and that was, allegedly, Sprint´s line-up for 2010. One of the names on the list was the HTC A9292, although all knew about the mysterious handset at that time was it would be a classic candybar featuring WiMAX support. However, more details on it have just surfaced on the Web. According to Engadget, the information comes from a reliable source and assuming it´s true, we can definitely say the hardware features of the cell phone make it a real monster.

It seems the codename of the handset is the Supersonic and it has already been mentioned on HTC´s list of Android-based cell phones. The device will be similar to the HTC HD2 and equipped with 4.3-inch display and fast processor (that still remains unknown) integrated into a really thin body. It´s interesting to know the handset will have a kickstand on its back (like the HTC Imagio) and roll out in a pearly white color that is a rare feature with cell phones of the manufacturer. The HTC Supersonic will be running Android 2.1 and HTC Sense interface, but the source of Engadget claims the version of the latter is still plagued by a great number of software bugs, which probably means the device is not coming out anytime soon. With its hardware specifications and WiMAX support, the HTC Supersonic has the potential to become one of the most powerful smartphones at the time it hits the shelves, although we better wait and see what other manufacturers may have in store for us.

Yeah, as one of the news writers here at PPCG, I have been watching reports on this phone very closely. It is rumored to have a snapdragon processor and if it comes to Sprint like they are talking (I have seen second quarter of this year a couple of places) then I will jump all over it.

Ironically, I got the Moment for the hardware KB and I never use it. And with a 4.3" screen, the IME would have to be pretty damn nice. If I hear or see anything else concrete, I'lll make sure to post it here.

Re: The HTC Supersonic

My problem with the Supersonic is... it's not enough.

Android+Snapdragon+4.3" display+WiMax all sounds good on paper, but considering it may not get released until Q3 or Q4 of this year, with the exception of WiMax, that is all last year's technology.

Of course no one is 100% certain which proc it's running on -- could be a Tegra 2, fingers crossed. But a 4.3" screen that's non-AMOLED? Couple that with WiMax and the battery won't last 3 hours even with low usage. Why are all of these companies making so much headway with all other aspects of the industry and no one has bothered to advance the art of the battery one bit?

I was really hoping Sprint might pick up the HTC Bravo/Incredible this Spring and then the Supersonic later on. Maybe they will, maybe not. But unless the Supersonic comes with some revolutionary battery, or an AMOLED screen, or a Tegra 2 proc which consumes 50% less power, the Supersonic won't be worth the wait.

Good point, would hate to have a device that I constantly have to keep on the charger....
