1X is the same as 2G. It will use a lot less battery. My weather updates fine on 1X but data for internet, Youtube, Bing!, or WiFi Router(etc) will be slow. So I have it set to turn on 3G(EVDO) when I open ICS, Wifi router. Not sure if you can do it with weather or custom apps. Haven't checked.
