[SOLVED] GPS not "locking on"

Last Edit:

I got my replacement TP today. Ran through the usual
1. PRL update (PRL update should have no bearing on the GPS but this is what I do whenever I update rom or get a new unit)
2. Profile update
3. Quick GPS.

I was too impatient to download the Google Maps so I used the Live.

VOILA~! I am locked on to 8~9 satellites.

I do see the lag that everyone is talking about. I am glad that HTC knows about this issue and hopefully they will solve the lag issue ASAP.

Having said that, for those of you who are experiencing no satellite lock with these Sprint TP's don't look through the web for solutions... Just go to customer service and have them swap your phone out. I guess I took one for the team, spending hours to find a solution that never existed in the first place.

If you have problems with GPS right out of the box, see if the symptoms are similar to mine down below. If it is, you have a lemon. I can document many people who have the SAME problems here at PPCGeeks, XDA-Developers, Smartphonejunkie and WMexperts.

Again, don't waste your time trying to find a fix, just get your unit replaced...

PM me if you need help.

Edit.

It seems like there is a batch of TPs out there that possess the same GPS issues. I'm getting a replacement and hopefully that will solve the problem. However I don't want my effort in trying to fix this thing go wasted so I want to see if we can find people that has these issues and try to track them together. Maybe we can find a combination of Rom/Radio that will fix this issue.

Symptoms:
1. The GPS will not "lock" on to a satellite. (Google Maps, TomTom 7, Windows Live, Sprint Nav, etc...).
2. IF it does lock on, it has a HUGE lag. You can walk 200 feet and not notice any change (ie: Google Maps all the way zoomed in)
3. The GPS will almost never lock in inside the car and inside the house.

Track
1. Did the GPS work "out of the box"?
Yes/No
2. If it did not work, did you get it to work? (If yes, please provide us with "how")
Yes/No
3. Please state the Rom (name and version) and Radio version
Sprint Stock 1.03.651.3
Radio. 1.03.15F

Tried
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427888 and
http://bradmarsh.net/index.php/2009/...tion-and-lags/
not working.
NOT HAVING GPS SERIOUSLY KILLS THIS PHONE'S USEABILITY!

I found this link -> http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49933
Would this work for Sprint?

I'm not sure if you tried the basic stuff, so lets start there. 1. Click Start-Settings-Phone-(Services tab), then make sure Location Setting is highlighted, then click on the Get Settings button. Make sure it is On. 2. Click Start-Programs-QuickGPS, then click on the Download button and make sure it updates. Then go outside and make sure you have a clear view of the sky. Open Google Maps, then click on Menu, then click on Use GPS and wait several minutes. It shouldn't take several minutes, but it might. Let me know how it goes. Good luck

Re: GPS Still Not Working

Of course it works with the clear view of the sky!!!

But the problem is that it does not work inside the car or inside the house.
I used to own the Sprint HTC Mogul and that old brick worked inside the house, inside the car and below the basement!

If I can't get the GPS to work inside the car, it pretty much defeats the purpose of its existence, doesn't it?

Thank you for your help =). But maybe I wasn't clear enough.

How can I get HTC Touch Pro to work inside the car without any lag?

Thank you!

Edit: I've tried with 4 roms so far.

Sprint Original Rom
KK 1.8
Mighty
Juicy 6

They all have same symptoms. It locks in after about 2 to 3 minutes outside in a clear sky without any obstruction. And it does so with a LOT of lag. I can walk 200 feet and the GPS coordinate will not change....
Come inside a car or a house and you lose your GPS lock immediately.

Re: GPS Still Not Working

i actually had some issues with the GPS on my phone, but it was all due to user error in which i was manually changing the ports and settings on the GPS chip. Once reverted all is back to normal with fairly quick locks

If anybody is aware of the symptoms but has a solution please do share!

Thanks, thats very helpful.

Then how come the old Mogul and Helio Ocean all work inside the home AND car?

Inside a car, it should get the signal, but how you expect the phone to get the GPS signal?

Did you have to apply a fix to get your TP to work or did it work right out of the box?

Re: GPS Still Not Working

Mine has always worked flawlessly. It's worked on Verizon Stock Rom, Juicy Rom, and every Mighty Rom from version's 4.11 through 4.16

Thing is have you guys flashed your original stock Roms and then tried it with your carriers nav apps ? I'd say if you tried that and the GPS doesn't work its hardware. I would definitely try that.

Yes, I put the original stock ROM back in, tried google maps, and windows live to no avail.

Yea but what carrier are you using ? Some carriers have the GPS locked down, such as Verizon. You cannot use the GPS natively with any other app except the Verizon Nav software. You have to install llbored's GPS fix to the Verizon Stock Rom to use the GPS with any other app.

So the question is what carrier are you using, does that carrier lock down the GPS, and are you trying to use Google and live nativley or did you install the GPS fix before trying.

Hey lordshadowz...the OP is very confusing. His GPS works, he just has a lag problem which is very well known and documented on many websites. Not everyone is experiencing this lag problem, but it is bad enough that it's on wmexperts.com. http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/do...n_the_tou.html

Ahh I had read the post where he said it wasn't working. Which I thought meant not at all. Thats why I suggested to revert to a stock rom to see if it works with the carrier's rom to test to see if it works and that its not a hardware issue. Sorry for any confusion.

Yea...it got me too. Not your fault. He even named the thread wrong.

Re: GPS Still Not Working

Must have spent over 24 hours trying different roms and solutions out there. I took the phone into the store, will be getting a replacement soon.

Edit: I spoke with HTC and Sprint.
Conclusion: Sprint Customer Service- Clueless.
HTC Customer Service- Not Helpful.

The GPS on the mogul ROCKED... I'd never thought that I'd miss my mogul.

I miss my Mogul too but not for the GPS. I get 5 second locks and average around 10 to 11 satellites on my Alltel Touch Pro. And that's on any rom I flash and with no GPS tweaks. Sad to hear some of you are having such bad luck with your GPS.

Mine has never caused any problems either. In Googlemaps, from the second the program is loaded, I have a full 9+ sats locked in under 5 seconds. This is sitting on my couch, 2 small windows in the room that are always covered.

But my phone is about 2 weeks old. maybe that have fixed something in these newer phones. I am now running mightyrom 4.16 and it works fine too.

Here is my Sprint TP reading five seconds after I opened the HTC GPS Tool inside my house:

This is a Sprint phone running Mighty 4.16 activated on Verizon service.

I did no GPS tweaks of any kind & this phone is 4 months old.
