sprint tethering speed issue

i've searched and searched and can't find a related post to my problem. I have a CDMA touch pro (obviously) running merdins newest (i think) rom and i've tried three different radios. i connect my phone via usb using ICS hacks and using WMWifirouter my connection seems to work great. I go to speedtest.xxx whatever the one is that everyone posts the picture with and i get speeds from anywhere from 1000kb and 1200kb. That seems like the average most people also get, but when i download anything i can only seem to reach 100to 150kb pretty steadily. I also use a download manager sometimes and that has an automatic speed regulator and it shows my max bandwith available and that jumps between an average of 700kb to 1200kb but never gets under 500kb. Now i know its not the sites i'm downloading from because when i am d/ling anything i my surfing is very very very slow so i'm obviously using all the bandwith available. Now is this normal due to it being a cell connection?? if it is than i don't understand why everyone posts their phones internet speed because i could do the same when i know i'm only getting 150kb or so, or is it an issue that other people have and is fixable. ohh and i also had the same issue using the wifi connection thats why i began to use the usb because i thought it might be faster. sorry for the super long message but i would appreciate any help, thankx

Re: sprint tethering speed issue

I think you are suffering from a common misunderstanding to tell you the truth.

Speedtest's website shows you your transfer speed in terms of kbps (kilobits per second), however, when you download something with Internet Exploder/Firefox/most other applications it tells you your download speed in terms of kBps (kiloBytes per second).

There is roughly 8 kilobits to a kilobyte, so 1200 kilobits = 150 kBps, or exactly what your download speed is.

wow thanks wolf. i'm an idiot because i actually knew that from testing my cable connection back in the day. just like a 5meg service only will download in the 400kb range not 5mb a second. i never even thought about it. i think i was confused because i thought sprint evdo was faster than that. Also though i feel like i am still not downloading to my phones full potential because when i use my download manager (flashget) it sets my max bandwidth automatically and it usually shows my max being up in the 500kilobytes a second not bits range . but who knows maybe its jus wierd. i'll just have to be happy with what i got if there is no way around it. thanks for the reply

The highest speed I've gotten is 200 kilobytes / second when tethering, is which around 1600 kilobits per second.

I was really surprised the other day when I used my touch pro VS my EVDO card and the touch pro let me hit about 2400 kbps, aka 300 KBps, and on the card in the exact same area as the card only let me hit 1200 kbps. This could be due to the ICS hack I use on my phone... but not likely.

The EVDO card probably doesn't support Rev. A, like the TP does.

My TP frequently outruns the EVDO card we have at work.

Re: sprint tethering speed issue

Also don't forget that the maximum download speed is dictated by the number of users on the given cell site that you happen to be connected to at the moment and the total amount of bandwidth that is available on that particular cellular tower. If you're in the backwoods (hypothetically) with a cell tower that has a single T1 supporting it, then you won't get any higher than the speed of that T1 (1.544 mbps).

Your fastest speed is only as fast as your weakest link. It used to be the phone in that case. Now it's just as likely to be the backhaul capacity.
