Easily Recovering Apps/Settings After ROM Flash
Hey there everybody,
First off, yes, I know I'm a newbie on the forums here, but have been lurking for a while here, learning a lot, but there's just one thing that's been bugging me (and if I posted this in the wrong forum, please feel free to flog me ;) ). I have a Sprint Touch Pro running MightyROM 4.9.5, and love it. The problem is that in addition to the various apps that come with MightyROM, I have to install a variety of other apps and customized settings after installing the ROM. Is there an easy way to backup applications and settings that can then be recovered after a ROM flash? Primarily I'm concerned with my e-mail accounts, as I have five in here and it's a pain to reset things all back up after a flash. I also do have some other apps that I installed (TeleNav, PocketSharpMT, Citrix Client) that I wouldn't even expect to find in the ROM, but I personally need for work, and it'd be nice if I didn't have to reinstall all those, too. So what do frequent flashers do? I have a copy of Sprite Mobile backup as well as HTC Backup (my Sprite backup isn't working properly as it says it's not registered, even though I have the paypal receipt that I paid for it). I'd love to play with some of the new tweaks in the new ROMs, but don't want to spend a bunch of time reinstalling apps and settings afterwards. Thanks for any help you can provide! |
Re: Easily Recovering Apps/Settings After ROM Flash
The Sprite people provide good support, you should contact them to get your registration sorted out. The HTC backup is just a special build of the Sprite software but I think it may be timebombed. I'm not sure of that though.
Overall you are asking a really loaded question. You can backup most everything with Sprite backup. I can't recall if it restores email settings or not, but it probably does would be my guess. The question you didn't ask is SHOULD I restore a backup after I flash the rom. Generally this is a dubious undertaking. It may work OK(ish). But you're probably going to be "restoring" things over your new ROM, and if the kitchen used different versions of a given program, your settings may get royally screwed up. So, conceptually Sprite Backup is probably about the best sw out there to do this with. But you might be very unhappy with the results. The least of which won't be when you overlay new ROM code with the stuff from your old backup. |

Thanks for your input. I'll email the Sprite folks again and get my registration stuff figured out (they didn't reply to my last e-mail, so I don't know what's up). |

Re: Easily Recovering Apps/Settings After ROM Flash
IMHO, Sprite Backup is utterly atrocious. First, it didn't do what I needed done--to carry over all my programs and data from one Touch Pro to another with the same ROM version. After restoral, Update Profile and Update PRL give error 407. But OK, this may be some bizarre machine dependency hidden in the registry.
So I decided to try upgrading to Sprite Backup's latest and greatest version. Upgrades from one 6.x.x to another 6.x.x are free. I download the new version, but the old version won't uninstall. I try soft-resets, etc., but still the old version just won't go away. I google the problem, and find on Sprite's web site a program called UninstallSpriteBackup. exe for just this purpose. Its hyperlink is miscoded as a zip file, so Opera Mobile brings it down with a .zip, but I eventually figure that out and fix the suffix. I run the program, and it proclaims, "Uninstall successful." BALONEY. The old version of Sprite Backup is still there. It's listed in the Remove Programs list, but refuses to go away; and so the new version refuses to install. I am now left with no working version at all. Ergo, Sprite Backup is utter garbage. |

I'm not sure if his ROM has User Customization, but if it does that will work restoring all your apps and most of your settings. You can read more about it here.
