Thanks for writing this up. I recently got rid of my Diamond and just got my Pro in today. I'm excited to try all the ROMS for the Pro. This gave me an insight as to where I want to start. On the Diamond I was a fan of the Juicy ROMS myself. I wasn't really a fan of Mightys. But, now that I am happy with the PRO Its time to get into it! ;0) Thanks again for this post!

First, I tried using the Sprint stock ROM. As many of you have noticed, it's a little sluggish, and I didn't want most of the programs on there.

I used to have a Mogul. One thing I hated about that phone is that the slowest app was the phone. I mean, what's the #1 use for a phone? When pressing buttons, I'd dial the whole number, then watch as the phone slowly recognized the digits and entered them one by one (sometimes missing a digit).

Imagine my delight when I fired up my Touch Pro and it just... WORKED. I was very happy. And for a while, all was good.

Then, my inner tweak monkey brought me back here to see what ROM's were out.

The first one I tried was just the Sprint Cleanup thingy:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44583

That worked ok... but I wanted to see what else was out there.

So, first I searched... and searched... to see what ROM people really liked. Seems a lot of people like the Juicy 4.7 ROM. A google search for "juicy 4.7 herman download" revealed several torrent links that allowed me to get it. Apparently, Juicy's ROM wasn't put on this site because of irrational fear from the Mods or something. (Oh the irony... a bunch of hackers afraid of laws).

Before I could install my new Juicy ROM, I had to first unlock the phone. It was pretty simple- just followed the instructions here:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=43266&page=5 (see post #50).

One problem in these instructions is that the "hard reset" function has been changed by Sprint.

Old way (doesn't work any more):
While phone is on, press volume down, center d-pad, and stylus-reset until message comes on
New way (this works):
While phone is OFF, press volume down, cener d-pad, and power button until message comes on. Press volume up to complete.

So after putting on the HSPL (see instructions in post 50 mentioned above), I was ready to flash my Juicy ROM. I did it using Activesync from my PC and it was very fast/easy.

Here now, without further ado, are my reviews of various ROMS as I try them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

JUICY 4.7
----------

PROS

I liked the Juicy ROM- I noticed it was definitely faster. No lag when scrolling, programs loaded faster, etc. It has a clean interface and is very lightweight.

CONS

Since Juicy went into exile from PPCgeeks (lol), the ROM hasn't been updated in a while. The last update was 1/8/2009 I believe, but compared to others who update their ROM's daily... Anyway, this ROM was missing a few programs that I like, such as Sprint NAV. Also, I'm not a big fan of the black/grey theme. I like the colored icons from Sprint. But, this may be a memory hog, and I much prefer performance to asthetics. Juicy seemed pretty stable... I didn't have to reset any that I can recall.

During my tweaking, I tried to add a tweak that includes the Calendar App to the TFlo interface. Unfortunately, the one I downloaded was for the Diamond, and I wound up screwing up my TFlo. So, I figured I'd use this ROM as a comparison standard, and try some other ROM's.

KK's 1.4
--------

PROS

I liked this ROM because it let me try a BUNCH of programs. It has a stock market tab on the TFlo interface, as well as the calendar app (which Juicy lacked). It not only comes with Sprint NAV, but a bunch of other cool GPS apps. (I really dig GPS stuff for some reason). Perhaps my most favorite program was the light saber program that made sounds when you swing your phone around. This pleases my inner nerd. The interface was fantastic- everything that I could want... battery with % meter on every page, pretty icon colors, wallpapers, etc.

CONS

All of that luxury comes at a price, however. The phone was about as sluggish as the stock ROM, despite other's claims that it ran fast on their phones. Perhaps the fact that I don't do a hard reset after every ROM upgrade may have something to do with it. But I've seen other ROM's that are faster right after flashing, so I don't think this is an issue. I decided to try the ROM out for a while despite the slight lag. (If it were really bothersome I would have immediately switched to another ROM). It did lock up a couple of times on me, and it wouldn't run my Monopoly game. (I gotta have my Monopoly fix). Another thing I didn't like was that the home screen couldn't make up its mind whether to flip or not when I slid open the phone. So, I wrote down the programs that I really liked on this ROM, and decided to try another one.

Programs I dig: Beejive (chat), In call recorder, light saber, smart phone tracker, stopwatch, ticker tape, hTorch, psShutXP.

Mighty ROM 4.9.3
----------------

PROS

Of all the ROM's I've tried so far, this one seems the fastest and most stable. (Even faster than Juicy's in my opinion). Now, I'm not doing any "benchmarking" or clinical tests here. This is all subjective. Things I look for when testing speed:

- how long does startup take?
- how long to populate the windows folder in file explorer?
- how long does it take to scroll quickly in the windows folder?
- when switching to phone app, how long a delay is it between when I press a number, and a sound is heard?
- when typing with keyboard in a long threaded SMS, is there any delay in key presses and text appearing on screen?
- how long does it take to open & scroll the Programs window?

Based on these quick-and-dirty tests, the Mighty ROM is faster than all previous... hands down. But, it's also light on content (like Juicy's). Obviously there's a trend here. When using KK's ROM, I felt like I had a really feature-rich gadget that I wanted to show off to everyone. With Mighty ROM, I feel like I have a super fast gizmo that does everything I need, and fast (but without the curb appeal).

So that's where I am for now- I'll probably stick with Mighty for a while, uploading content I need (like Sprint NAV). Stay tuned for future reviews...

*********************************************
UPDATE (2/4/09)

Using Mighty's ROM, I decided to see how it would behave with various themes installed. First, I tried the BBExtreme theme (from Showaco). A little confusing on how to install.... couldn't find the wallpapers folder. Then I found Showaco's Blue TF3D theme, and it had additional install instructions for Sprint. Apparently, I needed to install a few files first in order to get the theme to work. All of those threads are at XDA. (I won't post URL's here... not sure what the rules are). At any rate, the blue theme was very cool, and only slowed down the Mighty ROM a tad bit. I like the colors and effects, so it seems to give the phone the "flash" I was looking for without sacrificing speed. I did note that the CFC version (compressed) seems to work a lot faster than the regular version. Faster = Better as we all know. (So I don't know why the author still has the regular version available... but whatever). I did notice that this theme doesn't change the hideous green highlight color... so I just installed UItweak and played around with that until I found a highlight color (blue) I could live with.

So I got most of my applications installed... now I gotta figure out how to save this setup to a BIN file or something so I can go back to it later.

verry good post but people are going to like different roms for different reasons. Your post will definately help them decide which one to try first.

I'm on mightys 4.9.5
Been flashing alot but this one is really good enough to stay for now.

The Manila 3D version it has seems the quikest yet. Very impressive, close to 2d speed!
I found other versions with the manilla 3D a bit slower, and the HD versions even more slower.
I cant stand that delay and no landscape on HD manilla versions.
This rom is fastest for me when switching into "start\system" and when viewing a generated list of thumbnails in pics.
Im on sprint so I do not adjust pagepool. I leave setting however the rom came so I can judge the difference.
Im pretty shure changing pagepool setting would help other carrier users more.

I also found out that Voice Command responds differently on different roms.
I thought it was not hearing me properly, but I was fooled...

You have to actually speak "faster" or "slower" depending on which rom you use!

So is the latest Mighty ROM faster / more responsive than the latest Juggalo ROM? I haven't flashed my new TP yet. I didn't really like Mighty ROM when I last tried it. I did like Juggalo's ROM. Still holding out, hoping Juggalo hasn't decided to stop doing his ROM.

I was on Juggalo 0.08B rom B4 I switched to Mighty rom.
yes the maila is slightly faster.
I liked Juggalo as a base rom but mighty has more customization done so I wont hav to.
So yes latest version better than previous mighty roms.

Re: Dr. Squishy's ROM Review Thread (Updated 2/4/09)

I have tried the four big roms and for me the winner is Juggalo's .08b rom.

Juicy 4.7 was fast, but very barebones, and its quite old now. As I understand, he is one of the best, and it shows, very fast and nice.

KK 1.4 (didn't get 1.5) has WAY too many things, which is the point. It was a great rom to try out various apps, but not to use daily. It is way too slow compared to the other roms.

MightyRom is pretty nice. I just had the newest 4.9.5 I think and I used it for 3-4 days. Here were my issues with it:

1. Personal taste, but I don't like the whole everything black thing he has going. I like the clean white manilla look. Adding themes doesn't recolor the dialer, etc. I DID like the Touch HD contacts addition to TouchFlo.

2. The rom would glitch up HORRIBLY when using my hardware keyboard. Say for example I would want to type a text message. I flip the keyboard out and start typing. The first 3-4 letters were normal, but suddenly lag would increase. A second per letter, then 2 then 4, then toward the end, I would have to wait 5-6 seconds to see what I was typing.

But it wasn't just what I was typing anymore. Once I closed the keyboard, the phone remained slow, TouchFlo would freeze for 5-10 seconds at a time, windows wouldn't load for a while, everything was horribly slow. This would go on for 3-5 minutes. Either I waited it or out, or I had to reboot. This was the big deal breaker. This was not unique to me, at least three or four other people reported it in the thread. But it did not affect everyone.

3. For whatever reason, GPS would take a lot longer to lock on, and I would break locks more frequently.

The last rom is Juggalo .08b. It is very old now and I am REALLY hoping Juggalo releases an update.

The rom is FAST, the manila is a teeny bit slower than MightyRom, but thats because its a month old. The thing is, its stable, no crashes, super fast GPS locks, my hardware keyboard does NOT make the phone slow down to a crawl for 3-5 minutes. Plus it looks nicer too with the older white dialer and the custom icons.

I know you can install the custom taskbar icons yourself, but I don't get why Mighty has not put them in yet, they are great and people love them.

In any case, I may be an exception to the rule, the MightyRom is really awesome overall, but the issues I had made me go back to the one month old Jugallo .08b and I love it again. It is based on earlier builds, but its stable and fast, which is what I really need in my phone.

Re: Dr. Squishy's ROM Review Thread (Updated 2/4/09)

I have tried Juicy's, KK's and Mighty's. I like them ALL. I think I like Mighty a little more because of the speed. I'm thankful to these guys for the work they do on these ROMs. I know it's a matter of time before WinMo 6.5 and the TouchPro2 ROMs will be available. I just appreciate that these guys will make them available to us.

Are you using VistaHide? If so, that's the problem. I had the same lag issues as you - and the same general slowness. I removed VistaHide and everything became faster. Much faster. VistaHide battery gauge screws up the rom for some reason.

If you're not using VistaHide... can't help you.

I'm using the latest Se7en rom and at first flash did not work. But I installed the sprint version of opera and the flash youtube videos work fine. I almost forgot to mention I had to install flashlite 3. This rom is fast and everything works. The only thing that it does not have is the fast battery charge. I don't mind though because battery life is great.

I agree that it is aesthetically appealing but is pretty slow compared to some of the other ROM's here such as Mighty, Juicy, SSK, JD, Dream, MerdinH...and a really nice beta from XweaponX.

I think I will run this ROM for a little while though because even if a little slow, it is really nicely done and pretty loaded.

I was hoping to see a comparison between Mighty and Juggalo's ROM. Juggalo's rom was very fast, but I honestly couldn't stand the graffiti startup page. I decided to use a stock ROM with a modified paging pool. With the file, glyph cache settings bumped, it works well.

The only thing I got so far was a pm from tech telling me it was a great rom. His only front was the startup time. Which is due to the reg setting of preload programs first for faster start which I like. Soo let me know guys I want to get better!

I'm really impressed with scrosler's latest ROM, SSK 1.5 B2B. After bumping up all the caches to their maximum value and installing a couple other programs, I still have 135MB free RAM. Comes with an excellent selection of software, the theme is great, and it's FAST. I've tried juggalo .88b, Mighty 4.11, Juicy 4.11, and JD's latest, and this is by far my favorite.

KK's latest Loaded rom has switched to same ROm/SYS from Scrosler SSK Kitchen so should be good too!

Edit:
KK's 1.7 is running faster than B4. Now it runs like a "slim" rom.

I like all of them.Right now I am using a rom I did in GC'S kitchen this way I could add or delete what I wanted and I have alot of apps loaded and still have 126.80MB free space in programs and 272.21 MB free in internal storage and I don't feel there has been any compromise in speed.
