SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
1 Attachment(s)
It seems their are a few users that are having trouble syncing their
HTC Touch Pro's with Ubuntu Linux. The following is quick guide of what worked for me. Phone: OEM Sprint HTC Touch Pro ROM version: 1.03.651.3 ROM Date: 09/12/08 Hard Reset out of the box Applied GoodThings2Life Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition) http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44583 Operating System: Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 Fully Updated Jan 25th On Ubuntu, go to System>Administrator>Synaptic Package Manager 1. Install the following programs multisync-tools multisync0.90 opensync-module-python opensync-plugin-evolution opensync-plugin-google-calendar opensync-plugin-synce python-opensync synce-gnomevfs synce-gvfs synce-hal synce-multisync-plugin synce-sync-engine synce-trayicon 2. Reboot Viola! The SynCE Tray Icon should appear. Right Click this Icon to explore files, install cabs, and drag and drop from Nautilus File Manager... etc... P.S. Some users are having to open a terminal and type "sudo modprobe ipaq" in order to get this to work. Special Thanks to: Smeal's Scrapyard - Enjoy Runamok81 |

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
UPDATE:
After Using BigDiesel07 Speed Up Storage Card Tweak I can now view the storage card. Not sure if this is due to tweak or reboot. Regardless, if anyone is having trouble with viewing empty folders or storage card, you can try changing the directory SynCE browses from "synce://Pocket_PC/" to "synce:///" GoodLuck |
Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
Do you sync your contacts and calender to Ubuntu? If so, what PIM are using? I am using Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2. If I could get my Touch Pro to sync with a contact manager and calendar, I could make the switch.
Thanks. |
Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
This will work in Kubuntu, however you must have Evolution installed. Evolution is the PIM used in this instance.

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
I've tried SynCE, it's decent. At the time I used it, I was syncing to MS Office on my other PC so it kept duplicating my contacts.
Got lazy and gave up. Thanks for the tutorial, I'll use it if i want Ubuntu again. |
Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
Thanks for the info! I tried multiple ways to sync with ubuntu with no results before. i'll try this out later.

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
I use synCE for transfering files. I decided on using google sync to keep my contacts updated, works like a charm.:headbang:

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
This should work with Fedora 11 right?
|
Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
If you can find the correct software/compile it from source, it should work fine. Linux is Linux, no matter how you dress it up.
And thanks to the OP, been looking for a way to sync at work (all Linux machines). |
Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
Quick question, does this also make you able to use the HTC Touch pro for tethering?
I ask because I have some strange problems tethering my phone with debian testing (see: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.p...261093#p261093 ) TIA |

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
i had synce for a while, but i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to dinking around in linux, and find that i'll sometimes accidentally bust things. i keep a windows 7 partition up for gaming as well, so i just put outlook onto it, in order to keep everything synced. i haven't had a 'contact doubling' since windows 7, altho i got double, sometimes tripling, in xp. may have to do with the way the new windows mobile device center works, instead of active sync

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
Awesome info! big props!
I noticed you had opensync-plugin-evolution as one of the packages, for whatever reason, I cannot use evolution with my mail client, would there be any deviation from what you have written for me to be able to use Thunderbird instead? eg. what would the package name look like? (I looked for opensync-plugin-thunderbird with no success...) Thank you for your help and info! |

Re: SOLVED: How to Sync HTC Touch Pro with Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 (Synce)
I'm glad that this guide has helped so many getting Ubuntu 8.10 to play nice with Windows Mobile on a Touch Pro.
Since creating this guide I have now moved on to a Touch Pro 2, and upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. For anyone that has done the same, this guide will indeed work for newer editions of Ubuntu. With one small change. Just follow the steps above, and install all the packages. However, you will notice that the package called synce-gvfs is no longer offered through the synaptic package manager. There is a fix for this. We need to manual add software sources for the location of the newest synce-gvfs. Step 1: Add new software sources Go to System, Administration>Software Sources. Enter your password. Click on the Other Software tab. Click on add.... At the command APT line enter: Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/synce/ubuntu karmic main Click add again. At the command APT line enter: Code:
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/synce/ubuntu karmic main Click on "close" Click on "reload" You have now updated your Software sources to include the newest synce-gvfs for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Step 2: Update Public Keys, Update Packages, Install synce-gvfs Open a terminal by going to Applications>Accessories>Terminal Once the terminal is open type this command Code:
gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv B152F042D246C25D then type this command Code:
gpg --export --armor B152F042D246C25D | sudo apt-key add - Now type Code:
sudo apt-get update Now type Code:
sudo apt-get install synce-gvfs Step 3: Reboot! - Enjoy! |
