meant that if he doesn't know what an OEM is, he should prolly do some research on that before attempting to customize a ROM in a kitchen which utilizes OEMs. |
Re: custom ROMs
on that note...what exactly is the difference between an OEM and a regular ole .cab file?

a .cab on the other hand is installed separate from the ROM after you boot your phone and gets erased on a hard reset |
Re: custom ROMs
well then how to add cabs to existing ROMS ? what do i need for that ?

Just put all your cab files on memory card ... you can do auto install or do it manually once u boot your phone up! |

The difference between a .cab and an OEM is an OEM is basicly just files and registry settings, designed to cook into a ROM. A .cab is that and more. A .cab is designed to be installed on a phone (not part of the ROM) and can do more sophisticated actions than just registry changes and file copies. It is for this reason that not all .cabs can be turned into OEMs. |

Guys, is there a way to apply a theme on top of one of these custom roms? I find the regular OEM manila theme that everyone uses for roms a bit boring!

1. learn how to add other oem's to the USER_OEM directory 2. Learn how to add your own registry tweaks you want to your rom. 3. learn how to replace the graphics (mostly .png's) inside OEM's for that "custom look". 4. learn how to make your own OEM's from .cab files. Then you will have all the skills of the average chef. Most custom roms are comprised of drag-n-drop an OEM into a kitchen and press play. And most all of the above skills are covered in my rom tutorials in my sig. I see someone linked the xda-wiki to make your own OEM's in a previous post. But just get in there and get your hands dirty. Then once your comfortable with all that, you would have learned quite a bit about rom structure, then you can dive into a kitchen like bepe's. But quite a few are comfortable using ppckitchen's kitchen and for most, that is all you'll need... Teach yourself a little at a time, you just can't expect to obtain all the knowledge overnight... |
Re: How to modify custom ROMs (add and remove cabs )
ya ppckitchen's buildos is much nicer for the starting chef, making all of your own oems from cabs can take a while if you don't have JUST the right oem version you are looking for.

Re: How to modify custom ROMs (add and remove cabs )
1. learn how to add other oem's to the USER_OEM directory
OEMizer does it 2. Learn how to add your own registry tweaks you want to your rom. no clue 3. learn how to replace the graphics (mostly .png's) inside OEM's for that "custom look". no clue 4. learn how to make your own OEM's from .cab files. OEMizer does it |

This will show you how to delete those programs you don't use and insert the ones that you do use! (This method doesn't always work with a PPCKitchen.org custom rom). Quote:

Re: How to modify custom ROMs (add and remove cabs )
some files are with 0409 and some are without ,, so which ones should i use ?
|
Re: How to modify custom ROMs (add and remove cabs )
0409 = English.
Some programs may have 2-4 different directories for them. There is usually 1. main program files 2. 192 or 96 files, (VGA/QVGA) 3. 0409 or language files 4. 192/96 0409 files These are usually in a decompiled rom, most OEM's made from .cabs usually have all the files in one OEM. |
