But wouldn't WiFi need to be activated on the phone to use WiFi tether? Otherwise, there is no wifi to tether with.

The main problem is that when I activate WiFi Tether, the computer sees the SSID, and seems to connect, but there is not data connection.

Wifi does NOT NEED to be activated to wireless tether. You should be able to tether by just pressing tether now.

OK. gotcha. Then I am still trying to figure out why my wifi tether is not working. Like I said, the computer connects, but there is not data service.

That was an issue on 3.4, you positive you're on 3.5? Someone else made that mistake a few days ago.
If you are on 3.5 then you can try uninstalling/reinstalling wireless tether. You need to grab pre9 from their site, I dont think the Market version will work, could be wrong on that.

Downloaded ROM Mgr, installed the ClockworkMod Recovery and backed up my current rom :)

Guess I'm on my way now? lol

Be careful when wiping you may best change recovery in rom manger to Aman ra 1.80 it wires cache and dalvik cache properly if changing roms some stuff can be left behind.

apps like: facebook, footprints, mobile guide, news, stocks...

Thank you IKS! I tried pre9, but still no joy. I tried pre8, and it works. I initially got an error that the access point failed, but I just tested and it works.

Any idea why it would not work?

I use facebook, news and stocks. I say just leave them in there, the majority of the garbage been removed already anyway.
