Sms text message

I've have noticed that in the sms app there are no options to input smiley faces. Is there a way to input smiley faces on the diamond. Also is there a way to bypass the 160 character limit that sprint imposes. If not, what are their any aftermarket text programs that i can use to substitute for the built in sms program. Thanks guys.

There are no built-in smileys as such. You can save your own in "My Words" for quick access but imo it's probably just as easy to type it in every time.

For 160 char limit, it's a network imposed limit. ie you can type as many chars as u like (more than 160), it'll let you keep typing but it'll automatically break up the messages into chunks of 160 chars each and charge you for multiple texts messages. eg if you type 161 chars, u pay for 2 texts. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the reply wasn't sure if i would have needed a reg edit to get more than the 160 characters. However with the smileys are u serious, please tell me ur kidding me there has to be some way that its hidden and we just dont know it yet. Because manually typing them in is ridiculous. What about another sms programs is there any or any good ones out there

wow, i never even knew that was possible. So wait, if i send out a smiley, will the other person actually receive it like a smiley (regardless of whether they have a winmo phone?) because i thougt sms was txt based only.

No clue... Just knew that was out there. Maybee you both have to have the program. Maybee like here how they use code for smiley's.  something like that I'm sure, but am totally just brainstorming...

Nope, wasn't kidding :)
Why is manually typing so hard? It's just 2 characters or 3 at most.. takes about 2 secs imo.
Also, have you tried adding them to "My Text" like i suggested?

There are also quite a few "smilies" in the OEM Compact QWERTY KB. Look in the last few "pages" of the symbols.
They aren't animated, but I can't imagine that any will be received as animated if the person receiving doesn't have the software mentioned earlier in this thread. SMS is text only.

Vito SMS Chat is an option. If the other person has smiley support they will receive as a smiley. If they do not it will look like it does on your diamond now. SMS chat will show some smileys though while it is minimal.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction for this program been testing it for the past 24 hours. While not perfect it does address my need for smilies without manually inputting it. Also found another software powersms which is wonderful.

Thanks to you also for providing info on this program. I tried it and its nice only problem is i couldnt find an option that provided built in smiley face's so i would have to manually put it in just like the regular sms program on the diamond. Unless u or anyone else knows of an option in this program that has it already built in.

It has an option for quick messages. You can replace the ones like Ill be back soon or whatever with the smiley of your choice.

How do you find that in the app and also do you have to manually input the smiley's or are they built in and u just have to click on the picture of the smiley you want?

Which PIM do you use? If you use PCM keyboard, you can make the layout of the keyboard do smileys via the hidden keys. If you hold down on certain buttons on the keyboard, it reveals hidden keys that you can just drag your finger accross to highlight and let go to select it. In this layout hold down the period button to get to the two smileys. Here are the skins and layout that I use. If you don't like the layout or want to add more smileys, tranfer the .layout file to your pc. Then rename it with .txt at the end of the file. Open that file up as a text and you will see the line with the hidden keys .com, .net, .org, smileys, etc. Just replace the ones you don't need with your wanted smileys. Save the file, and rename it again this time erasing the .txt and leaving .layout at the end of the file. Transfer that back to your phone and PCM folder and you can now choose that layout. This works great with the SMS Smiley program.

thanks for the help Mr. Hawaii. I have been using your skin for the pcm keyboard for the past couple of days. Best keyboard but only with your skin and layout. I just noticed what you said with holding on to the period sign. Only thing is it brought up only two smileys. I know you said that i can add more but thats the problem i'm so used to having built in smiley pics that to manually put them in besides the basic :) i'd be lost. Maybe in an updated skin you will add more faces in there. But thanks for your help and the best keyboard thus far on the diamond.

Re: Sms text message

LOL, I wouldn't know what they meant either without the pics.

I guess now with that Smiley SMS program I can relate the pics to the symbols and try to incorporate it into a new skin. Any preffered Smileys, you can do 10 hidden keys going across, please let me know what you think the 10 most used ones would be. And please use the symbols with the Smiley SMS program, because if it differs from the program it won't read it is a smiley. Thanks.

Hey Gang,

I have updated my PCM Keyboard Skin to now include Smileys/Emoticons. This includes new keys to input Smiley Symbols with pics to help us know what those symbols mean. The pics of the Smileys are only recognized by the keyboard though, native WinMo does not recognize symbols as smileys it will only recognize the symbols as they are. You can download apps like what was shared in the previous post like Smiley SMS which recognizes smiley symbols in a threaded text app. Attached is the updated skin and layout, you must use both. The skin deals with the appearance of the keyboard so that is where the pics are in. And the layout deals with the key layout, so that is where the new hidden keys are in. So you will have to use both. I had to remove a key to make a dedicated smiley key. Key removed was "\" however you still can use that symbol by revealing it via hidden key by pressing and holding down "/" key. I hope you all like it! I will try to incorporate the other colored skins with smileys later, kinda tired.

Whoa you are the man:headbang: already started working on it. That was fast. Thanks really appreciate it. I would say the ten most used smileys are 1) Smiley face 2) sad face 3) Angry face 4) Angel face (with halo on top) 5) Blushing face 6) Teasing face (tongue sticking out) 7) Bragging face (with glasses) 8) Shocked face (with eyes bulging out) 9) crying face (with tears) 10) Flirt face aka the wink

Just tried out the new keyboard layout with smiley pics. The smiley pics are brilliant. Nice size and resolution. This just keeps getting better and better. Can't wait till you add the rest. Keep up the good work. Your keyboard is ahead of the rest.
