Understanding Sprint's roaming

I was under the impression that with Sprint roaming on other networks is free. Yet, every month one or more of our lines (we've got a bunch on a family plan) has some (small) charges for roaming. Our plan is a very old, grandfathered family plan. Does that matter? Thanks.

Are they voice or data?

I know Sprint's data roaming is capped at 300mb a month.

It's voice.

there roaming is REALLY glitchy at best. A lot of the older plans don't have roaming but have something similar.

You can always call and ask for AM0R to be added to your account. Granted you still can't go over the 50% cap or whatever that sprint sets, but since I had that added to my account no more roaming charges were added (they were very minimal, like 1.20 or something, depending on how many minutes were used on roaming).

It might be just a surcharge for using roaming, and not a charge per min while roaming which is "free" in most plans.

Not if he's on an old grandfathered plan that does not have America Roaming on it

Sprint is really good about roaming once you get it set up. I had free roaming since the old analog days and I've never had a problem.
