AT&T requires data plans starting 9/6

I remember Engadget mentioning the rumor but didn't see a follow up but
i just got word that for those it affects, starting 9/6 ATT is going to start requiring a data plan on all smart phone activations and upgrades
i don't know why a smartphone wouldn't have it anyway but starting tomorrow its required

i know tmobile already does it and i think verizon does but i don't know for sure. and seems like sprint is getting less cautious about the everything plans so they're basically doing it. kinda sad really

I still have MEdia Net on my account instead of the stupid PDA data plan. I don't use much data (like 10-50mb/month) compared to some.

I hope they don't make it like the iPhone where their system can detect a PDA and automatically upgrade the data plan.

If they make you upgrade your plan during your two years shouldn't you have the option to drop their service? After all that's not what you signed up for.

existing plans are being left alone (thankfully) but they'll try to catch you if you upgrade or are activating a new line
