That's where you would need TEP.

This is a great move for sprint. Every time I've been into a sprint store in the last year it;s been a good experience, glad to see that this will continue.

I think the official word on it is that you have to add it to your phone within 30 days of activation. I could be wrong on that though.

I think Hafrust is right, other carriers have the same policy: You have to sign up for the TEP within 30days of activation (new line OR upgrade) or you can't get it till you can renew your contract again.
When I worked for a GSM carrier I had to make sure that people knew they hadto sign up for equipment insurance right then or within 30days so I didn't have to deal with their whiny faces when they sat on there phone. Sprint at least has repair centers.

If it helps explain/ If you care...
I went Mogul - Diamond - Pro

-I got the $7 TEP when I got the Mogul Last year
-Bought a Sprint Diamond on eBay. Asked them to double check my TEP while I was on the phone with them activating. Then I asked my local repair center guy to check. (of course the key is that it was a Sprint branded phone so they would insure it no prob)
-And finally... TEP transfered over to my Mogul-upgrade aka TPro the same way.

whoa wait.. so i can take my phone into sprint to get fixed instead of sending it to utstarcom and waiting a month to get it back, only to have them replace it with another defective part and have to send it off for another month?

..um.. is sprint 24/7? im calling..

Two methods:
  1. If you do the Sprint in-store service, as outlined by the new policy in the OP, you can now add TEP after your 1st servicing. That is, after your freebie they give now you a chance now to insure the device. That's a big policy change and welcomed.
  2. The unofficial way is to re-activate an older phone on your account then switch back after a few days to the "damaged" phone. This also "resets" the activation period and you should be able to add TEP to that phone. But it is generally then advised to wait ~35 days to make a claim on it, otherwise you may be flagged for fraud as it looks suspicious (duh).

Re: Sprint Warranty Change effective 4-12-09

Everyone here has failed to mention that the change is for in store WARRANTY. This covers mechanical and electrical failures caused by a manufactures defect..... Thats it. If you phone is physically damaged, water damaged or lost or stolen..... you'll be charged your deductible ($50 for "regular" phones, $100 for PDAs).

I would not advise dropping your TEP unless you plan on never damaging you phone. TEP (total equipment protection) is made up on two components. ESRP and ERP, Equipment Service and repair program and Replacement program, respectively. By itself either one of these programs are $4. Both together are $7. Now your MF warranty only lasts a year from activation (original activation on your account REACTIVATIONS DO NOT COUNT on the same account).

Outside of that year your are SOL if anything happens. You can only add tep after a tech recertifies your phone, within 30 days of the original purchase (new devices only), or you recieve a replacement. Without insurance, IF your phone can be repaired and it's not liquid damaged or physically damaged beyond a reasonable amount, it will cost you 35/55/99/ or 119 depending on what work it needs. Do the math... 7x12 is around 80 a year... full retail on a phone that you lost or damaged (not covered by MF warranty) is around 4-600 on any WM phone.... so 80+100 deductible is only 180 if you mess up your phone within the first year....

After 12 months... then you get money off you phone so the TEP may or may not be worth it. (unless you're sero, employee plus, advantage club, or a premier customer in which case you get a HUP yearly)

Sorry for writing a book but it just urks me how people say there's no value in TEP... and those are the ones that come back to see me complaining 6 months later that their daughter spilled juice on their phone and they want a new one for no charge b/c they pay their bill every month but opted not to pay for TEP. I pay my taxes every year since i was little... does that mean i get a year off if i don't feel like paying?

Re: Sprint Warranty Change effective 4-12-09

I understand your point. People do need to understand what the consequences might be if they choose not to have TEP. Personally, I don't think I'll keep it for a couple reasons. I have not ever had 1 device for over a year, I have not ever lost a phone or had one stolen, and I have not ever physically damaged a phone to the point of it not working. All of the exchanges I have done have been for hardware failure. I know that could change and something could happen, but I don't have a problem with paying the consequences in that event. I'll take responsibility should something like that happen.

that is not what i mind... at all... it's the people that fail to understand that without it they are not entitled to anything as far as free or paid repair should anything happen other than device failure

You really seem to have a solid grasp on this but here's a situation in which it payed off for me:
Remember when there was 1-2weeks where Sprint was simply swapping New/InBox TouchPros for Moguls?
Well I had probably taken my Mogul in for repair once every 5-6 weeks and they still p***** on me for that.
So a manager from Customer Retention got a Manager from Asurion on the phone with me and I was able to get an absolute assurance from both of them that I would get a brand new Touch Pro for the $50 insurance deductable.
$50 device upgrade made the previous 8 months with the Mogul worth it!

Just a thought
