Just Moved - 1 mile out of Sprint coverage - options?

I just moved today and one minute my phone has a strong signal the next it either has no bars or goes to roaming. I checked the coverage map on Sprint's website and it looks like I am about 1 mile out of their coverage area. I am not having much trouble making calls but am having trouble holding a EVDO connection. It keeps switching between EV and 1x. I need the EVDO because I am using it to tether and it is my only internet connection until I can get cable or dsl hooked up. I tried the reg edit to force EVDO and I actually get a decent connection for about 5 minutes then it goes to local only and I have to disconnect and reconnect to get back online. Anyone have any ideas? If I call Sprint can they do anything about it (of course I won't mention I am tethering)? btw a friend of mine lives a couple miles away and I get a perfect connection at his house.

talk to a sprint rep and tell them your situation, you might be able to switch carriers and not pay for it, should you have to get out of your contract.

Switching carriers is not an option for me.

I don't see what the problem is. One minute I'll have a good connection tethering then it will switch to local only and say "waiting for network" on my phone.

have you tried going into the phone settings and have it Roam only?

How do I do that? The only options I see for roaming are "Sprint Only" or "Automatic".

Come to think of it it could be the phone itself. I am on my second Pro and the first one got better signals at places I used it a lot (too bad it had many defects).

You could always build/buy an antennae/repeater system like this. But honestly it'd be cheaper to break your contract and switch carriers.

Found that thread right before you posted. I did the reg edit and so far the connection is stable. Unfortunately it is kind of slow (700kbps down 100kbps up compared to 1.2mbps down 500kbps up before I moved). But I guess I can't complain if it stays connected for more than 5 minutes.

Can't complain about an EVDO connection period if you're in a supposed area with no coverage. No amount of regedits is going to give you a better signal if you're in the middle of nowhere, hahah.

you could try lowering you accolc in pst.

otherwise, I would suggest an exernal antenna, you can pick them up for fairly cheep.
I have to put my phone in the window to get revA.

Suggest you try this thread:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...nating+account

The Roaming Only tweak works for me here on the outskirts of Tucson but I only turn it on when I need it and I don't tether much. If you over-use it, Sprint enforcers in black trenchcoats show up at you door. The Terminating thread talks about an AirWave/AirRave thing. I don't know what it is but it sounds like the ultimate problem solver and some people have gotten it for free from Sprint. See thread above for details.

I have the Airave and it is awesome, but it won't help the op since he wants coverage for his internet access. The Airave uses your existing broadband.

From what I read ACCOLC is a GSM protocol, does this still apply to the Sprint networks?

How about a different radio? The Telus radio maybe as it seems to work for quite a few.

Seriously,
Ask Sprint about an Airwave.

Tell them your story and see if they can discount it for you.

That won't work right now because as I understand it that requires a broadband connection which I don't have at the moment (although it may be an option in a few weeks if I can find an inexpensive isp). I tried to make some calls today and they didn't go through even with forced roaming (but tethering works fine on forced roaming although it is slow). I know I am close (within 5 miles) of a tower and sometimes my phone gets a few bars of signal without roaming but my calls just won't connect. Also I tried calling my voicemail today and kept getting a busy signal. I guess I'll call Sprint tomorrow and see what they can do. I would really hate to have to end my contract with Sprint because it is the cheapest service around here (not to mention Alltel wanted a $1000 deposit from me when Sprint only wanted $100). By the way looking at the Sprint coverage map there is coverage completely surrounding the small town I live in but roaming only in town which sucks.

Re: Just Moved - 1 mile out of Sprint coverage - options?

Well I talked to Sprint today about not being able to make calls without roaming and they offered me the airwave for $99 plus $5 a month (which doesn't help because I don't have broadband and the person I talked to said I don't need a internet connection for it ](*,)). After convincing them the airwave won't work for me (besides that I refuse to pay $100 more than I already have to use the service I pay good money for, I did try to get a free airwave for when I do get broadband but they refused to give me a free one) they basically told me there is nothing they can do for me.

So I guess what I will have to do is keep making calls on roaming and wait for Sprint to cancel my contract so I can go to a different company (hopefully I can find one that doesn't want an outragous deposit and compairable prices to Sprint). Anyone have any ideas how I can keep my Sprint service or am I out of luck on this?

Again, try and set you ACCOLC, and try a different (software) radio as others are posting good results with a radio swap.
