AT&T starts throttling

Quote:

So last month, AT&T "throttled" Trang's iPhone, slowing downloads by roughly 99 percent. That means a Web page that would normally take a second to load instead took almost two minutes.
AT&T has some 17 million customers with "unlimited data" plans that can be subject to throttling, representing just under half of its smartphone users. It stopped signing up new customers for those plans in 2010, and warned last year that it would start slowing speeds for people who consume the most data.
Quote:

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said that as of last summer, the top 5 percent of data users were using 2 gigabytes of data per month
:O they consider 2gb top data users? Isn't that one of their lowest data tiers? Not that I hit that much myself lol but still suprising

Limit On AT&T's 'Unlimited Data' Plan Surprises Some Customers

Re: AT&T starts throttling

As @DaveTN used to put it ;unlimited is um,limited. That's bogus that they aren't telling people where the throttle line is like what T-mobile is doing. I just broke my 10GB limit with them and am now being throttled.

@eric whats your throttle speed?

Re: AT&T starts throttling

its pretty reasonable, i can still listen to slacker radio and other music streaming apps. i get anywhere from 96 to 324kbps throttled. which is still faster than anything i've gotten with sprint in my last months with them

Karl 02-16-2012 02:42 PM

Re: AT&T starts throttling

man thats pretty much dial-up speeds that sucks

rainfreak 02-16-2012 03:55 PM

Re: AT&T starts throttling

Yeah, that does suck. But if that is better than he was getting from Sprint and he is saving money, I think it's a win-win for eric.

@rainfreak and especially considering that I can still stream radio, look at Facebook posts and comment without errors. None of that I could do with sprint. But tomorrow I'm back to the speeds in my sig.

Re: AT&T starts throttling

I did this math for someone in another forum:

Assuming the average data use is 1GB (which according to some cisco article, it was most recently) and that the top 1% use 24% of all data (same source) we can project that the top 5% of all users use roughly 70-80% of all data. Remove them from the sample size, and the AVERAGE use among the remaining 95% is...

310MB.

So yep, you very quickly enter the top 5%.

eric12341 02-16-2012 10:12 PM

Re: AT&T starts throttling

I use 310MB a day at least.

so your throttled after 2GB?

Re: AT&T starts throttling

I am wondering the same question... eric, how are your speeds after the 2GB?

he said he was getting 96-324 speeds at throttle

eric12341 02-16-2012 11:49 PM

Re: AT&T starts throttling

@Tinkerbell I have the 10GB plan with T-mobile and I get between 96 and have gotten as high as 324. Pretty much all over the 2G realm. AT$T throttles their Um,limited plans alot lower.

gullzway 02-17-2012 11:07 AM

Actually they offer 200mb, 2GB, 5GB, and 10GB plans.
The 10gb plan is $105/month total. Throttled to 2g speed after you hit the limit.

as i said. that is with hotspot services. eric claims to have a cheaper plan than sprint. so kick the 104(prepaid) out the door.

It includes hotspot service, yes, but it is a cellphone plan.
He claimed a cheaper plan than Sprint when he was on the $30/month 300 minute prepaid plan, I believe he switched to the plan I mentioned. Hence, I haven't seen him bragging about it being cheaper than Sprint anymore!

austin420 02-17-2012 11:51 AM

Not according to this.

@Tinkerbell may I suggest T-mobile instead? The speedtest I have in my SIG is just an example of the 3G speeds that you'll see , that's better than sprint 4G and better than sprint 3G speeds will ever be. Plus T-mobile also has better signal quality (different than strength) than sprint does. For example with sprint my Rx Power would always hover between -91dbm and -104dbm with 2-4 bars of strength. On T-mobile my Rx Power is -83 to -90dbm on 0 to 3 bars of 3G in my house all this and I'm paying $85 a month (after student rate discount) for 10GB of 4G data and unlimited 3G data (according to the rep who sold me the plan),500 minutes, unlimited night and weekend minutes and unlimited texts.

Studentrate gives 10 percent off.
The plan you mentioned was 104 prepaid.
Its 119 with contract and subsidized phone.
We will go on the assumtion that he is on the prepaid plan although, since he has bregged about his free hd7, we know he is accually on a subsidised plan.
104.99 minus 10 percent is 90 dollars.
That does not include taxes and fees. I have 5 lines on my plan, and I know I pay appx 60 dollars worth of fee and taxes. Let's take 1/5 of that. 12 dollars.
90 for the plan+ 12 dollars worth or taxes and fees comes to 102 dollars. And that's on tmo prepaid.
The same plan on contract would be more like 125 with a student rate discount.
Eric claims he is paying 85 dollars a month. Based on that, id say he is most assuredly not on the 10 gig plan.

Re: AT&T starts throttling

not sure how you gets are getting that base number :S

Unlimited - Ultra with Smartphone Mobile HotSpot Service
$94.99 /mo.
up to 10 gb of high speed data

Yes it only has 500 minutes, but with voip you can use the data plan to supplement minutes if you run out :S I do that on sprint's sero as well with my tp2

But I still like the $30/monthly tmobile though, it's comparable with sprint's sero without the hassle of limited phone selection

i was using the most minute plan to compare apples to apples with sprint unlimited mobile to mobile 1500.
i do see now that there are lesser minute plans.
i guess i was blinded by my dislike for erics redundant espousing of love for tmobile.

with only 500 minutes, my wife and her sister would be in to overages in about 3 days of talking. just our mobile to mobile on their 2 lines is 4500 minutes.

NinjaMom 02-17-2012 02:39 PM

Eric is allowed to blindly love t-mobile. Just gaze over his posts and move forward.

Let's stick to the topic on AT&T throttling their unlimited plan.

@austin420
I have the value plan 500mins unlimited text and 10gb of full speed data, with my student rate discount I will be paying in the 80s. This is cheaper than the almost $100 I was paying to sprint after I got my arrive even with the studentrate discount. This plan had only 450 anytime minutes and such, sure it had any mobile anytime but I didn't really use it as I don't use my phone much during the day. I don't love T-mobile, I love great service combined with great value and clear billing policies. So u failed.

Let's stick to the topic on AT&T throttling their unlimited plan.

so someone can start a thread about att, eric can bring up tmobile (as always) and if someone says anything to him about it, a mod says we need to get back on topic.
i got it.
i hope yall realize why no one comes to ppcgeeks anymore.

Some of the comments made were in violation of Site Rules specifically #2
therefore the request was made to put the thread back on topic

Edit:
By request was in reference to NinjaMom making the statement to stick to topic

Re: AT&T starts throttling

great. a request was made.
this site has about 6 members on top of the 15 mods and as it turns out, all 6 are informers.
\even less reason to come back.
in soviet russia, forum mods you!

Re: AT&T starts throttling

I mentioned T-mobile as a comparison to what AT$T is doing.

Eric's initial post was on topic. He just compared the topic to his experience with T-Mobile. It went downhill after that. In all fairness, there were posts made that were bending site rules. Out of understanding for the frustration over Eric's posts about tmobilet I stuck with a get back on topic response instead of handing out infractions.

Throttle or not, Sprint just plain stinks around here. Knoxville TN has absolutely NO 4G and the 3G is dial-up spped at best. IMHO, going with a carrier that throttles a good signal is probably better than one that offeres an unlimited crappy one.

After 15+ years with Sprint, I'm finally changing to Verizon this week which has awesome LTE where I live.

@DaveTN that's exactly why I went with T-mobile. Its quite pitiful that T-mobiles throttled speed is still faster than sprint 3G I can listen listen to slacker radio and Spotify etc which is what I couldn't do on sprint 3G.

HSDPA and HSPA+ are decent, but not half as fast as LTE
