Who knows about Sprint policies?

So here's my question...

If I buy a phone from ebay or craigslist and Sprint clears the ESN AT that moment in time and I buy the phone, if the contract that phone was purchased under goes on hold for non payment, how long after I add it to my account does Sprint still kill the phones ESN, rendering my phone useless?

Example, I buy a phone from Mr. Smith today, and Sprint clears the ESN and I add it to my account, 1/3/6 months later Mr. Smith cancels Sprints with a year left on his contract and doesn't pay his ETF, will Sprint dig up all known ESN's and kill them all, even know the phone is on another account now?

You might want to send Sprint an Email from their website to confirm. That way, you will have a written trail of what they told you.

Good advice jj...

It seems to me that the phone's ESN would be active on a "good" account therefore Mr. Smith's actions should ONLY have an effect on Mr. Smith's phones and not on YOUR phone which happended to be Mr. Smith's at one point.

But I'm not Sprint and I don't know their policies. LOL.

I did that already, they said that once it pairs with your account they can't kill the ESN. However, I thought I read somewhere here that Sprint still killed some dudes ESN after it was added to his account because the seller went rogue after the transaction. Figured someone here would have a horror story if one existed, so I throw the question out here to see what happens.

Yeah...
Not sure I've seen too many horror stories like that...
And I usually don't keep my phones that long... I went through countless dumb flip phones 3 Moto Qs, 3 Touches, 7 Touch Pros, and 9 Touch Pro 2s, I'm still on my first EVO but it's only been a few months... Give it time. I'll probably need a replacement soon.

Once it is activated on your account, its tied to your account and is all good. Mr former owner will have nothing more associated with that device.

You'll be fine. I bought an Evo from my buddy the day he told sprint to terminate is service. At that time his account was caught up and in good standing..well, he never paid his ETF's (2 lines) or the final bill, yet the Evo (and it's ESN) is fine.
