VPN with hotspot on 4G

Normally I send my files to work via VPN so I use my evolution and laptop alot on the road. So I pay the 30 bucks a month to do this since apparently "free" wifi (at&t) keeps kicking me off the connection. Obviously I'm not rooted since i use my phone ALOT for work and I'm still learning android...plus no time and need my phone to work 100% @ work. Anyways ...3G has been working pretty good with VPN but yesterday I was in an area with really good 4G and decided to use hotspot to hopefully send my files faster. I tried everything and it just wouldn't let me connect to company server so had to use 3G. I'm I missing something here? Isn't that what 4G is meant for?

sent from my Evo.

Wouldn't it be nice if LTE is even faster then 4g? I imagine 4g as a second rate connection, makes me laugh.
