Tethering questions

I installed FRX07.1. on my TP2 activated on Boost.

My question is, can I tether it to my computer? will I be able to access files on the SDcard and will I be able to share internet on the computer through the phone?

Thanks

Tethering works fine. USB tethering is rock-solid, but the built-in wifi tethering is flaky at best (seems to work fine until you want to disable it). Third party wifi tethering solutions (XDAndroid Wifi Tether for example) work without much breakage.

Access files on the SD card? You can't really do that now. USB mass storage doesn't work, Android is using the SD card so there's no way for Android to unmount it... It's in use!! You can use Droid Explorer to fake it tho. Please read the FAQ.

There is a way, but it requires patching initrd, a redone rootfs, possibly a new kernel, and a partitioned setup. I fiddled with it a few month back and it can be done, but is not very easy. A stock partitioned setup still has the rootfs open through the fat partition, even though it seems you can unmount /sdcard.

Thanks.

I installed Android explorer and it works, I'm still trying to figure out how to get internet on my computer through the phone...

Did you bother reading my post?

I addressed USB tethering, and 2 different types of wifi tethering (most of which is already in the FAQ!!) What more do you want!??!

I did read your post and the FAQ, that's how I knew to install Android explorer, I'm interested in USB tethering, however when I plug in the USB to the phone, my computer doesn't get an IP address and can't surf the internet. Do I need a driver? I think I read that that's impossible under windows 7.

Thanks again.

Someone said they couldn't, but I went home and plugged into my Win7 lappy and it hooked up right away. They never got back to me (or the thread) so I assumed it was user-error.

It doesn't get an IP, do you see some stuff in Device Manager that has a yellow question mark? I am going to pillage my Win7 lappy soon back to factory (needs repairs...) so I can see from a fresh install what happens. I'm 99.999999% sure adb is not required to tether.

Re: Tethering questions

NO yellow or red in device manager, no mention of phone either. I can try it on my XP netbook, do I need a driver for XP?
Does the fact that I'm using a spring phone on boost have anything to do with the problem?

Dude... I already said you probably don't need one for 7. I don't think you need one for XP. It should "just work".

You're enabling USB tethering after plugging it in, right?

Yes, I do the settings-Tethering and portable hot spots and enable tethering, but nothing

Nothing!?!? That sounds like a problem with your PC. As soon as I enable tethering, I get the noises that hardware has change has occurred.

If you have the option to enable USB tether, then the phone is recognizing it correctly. Try another USB port/cable and maybe different computer.

oh I do get that sound too, and on the phone it says: USB conected and a button 'turn on USB storage' which I dismiss by pressing the home key, then I turn on USB tethering, but the computer still doesn't get an IP address.

Ugh, you're going to make me flash WinMo back aren't you...

Last time I tried this, it "just worked". You're on the newest kernel/rootfs correct?

Why do you need to flash WinMo? the problem may be with my computer but I don't know. kernel version 2.627.46-01356-gd4c73bd GlemSom@autobuild

I'm on OMGB...

Are you on the newest rootfs as well...?

Either USB tethering was broken at some point, or you're not doing it correctly. Have you tried the other suggestions? Different port, cable and computer if possible?

How do I check for Rootfs? I tried different cable/port no difference. I doubt that's the problem because droid explorer works great.
when I plug in to my XP netbook it says 'found new hardware' wizard USB device. and it can;t find drivers.

One more thing. I have installed the sprint stock 6.1. before that I had the stock 6.5 and it tetherd great under winmo with script that modified the registry.

Maybe I should install OMGB?

lol, the solution is not OMGB. That's for testing/development, I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to help troubleshoot. Besides, I haven't been able to get USB tethering to work on that build yet. Just tried it yesterday, so far no go.

However, the fact that your XP "netbook" (odd) is finding new hardware is a good sign. Do you have another 'net connection in which to see if you can search for drivers on that machine?

I installed the tetherxp.inf driver on my XP netbook then turned on tethering on the phone, Device manager says "Android USB Etherent/RNDIS under 'Network adapters' and the netbook gets the good IP address of 192.168.42.17, but I can't ping yahoo.com nor can I surf the web.

DNS perhaps?

Can you ping 8.8.8.8? Are you able to ping the default gateway? ipconfig /all will show what is being used for DNS servers.

This is definitely progress tho.

I guess try manually setting your DNS to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Those are OpenDNS' servers. Not sure why you would need to do that, but that should make the 'net work.

Ok, now it's working, I can ping yahoo, but I wonder why I don't get the DNS servers automatically. may it have something to do with the fact that it's on Boost??

Hopfuly I'll be able to use it with windows 7.

Thanks for your help. I have some more questions, but I'll post them later...

Yea, I just wanted to establish that you could. No clue why you needed to put in DNS manually, I don't remember having to do that.

Not sure about Win7 either. Like I said, some dude said he couldn't get it to work, when everyone else said it was fine...

When I jump ship back to HaRET for testing I can try again.

Uhm, OK. I usually prefer people to ask build-related questions in the build thead, instead of creating a new thread... but whatever floats your boat.
