[SOLVED] Unable to send/receive MMS

I had been unable to send or receive MMS messages with FRX07.1. The sending issue was characterized by a persistent "sending" message, and the message was never sent. The receiving issue was characterized by a "downloading" message and the media was never downloaded. I tried several different APN settings and none would work.

I changed my radio from 2.32WU to 2.37WV and MMS now works with the APN settings in the FAQ.

Thanks to arrrghhh for the suggestion in this post. I guess this just means that I can't switch to GSM towers in the US if I wanted to, but that's not a big deal.

AFAIK the radio will work for GSM if you need it. Glad it fixed the problem!

Gawd... No. You took that completely out of context. I meant it'll work for both - the OP seemed concerned that changing radio versions would only work for CDMA, and it wouldn't work anymore for GSM - which isn't true. My point was it'll work for both...

Did you try actually sending a pic? I dunno if sending a pic to yourself even works. Never tried it TBH.

Radio firmware upgrades are a WinMo thing...

Dunno. Never tried to send one to myself like I said - but IMHO that's not a good test.

In the same boat. MMS forever downloads, only says SENDING. Grrr.

Works great for me! Doublecheck your settings. There are many, many people on Sprint that have fully functional MMS (with the right settings configured).

well i was able to receive an mms from my sister..however, i tried sending a picture and it didnt send..i waited for like 8 mins and then finally just gave up..shouldnt sending mms be the same settings as receiving mms?

Checked and rechecked my settings. Wasn't until after a reboot that it started working. Persistence paid off.

Hrm, I guess try rebooting like Imaginos did?

IIRC, the APN is only used for sending. Once the code was there in the system image to handle Sprint MMS properly, reception "just works" without any setup.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (Android; Opera Mini/6.5.26571/26.1023; U; en) Presto/2.8.119 Version/10.54)

I noticed that Data must be enabled for me to be able send MMS if using built in Messaging app. Would not work using WiFi with Data disabled.

Go SMS Pro on the other hand, worked with WiFi.

That's an interesting distinction... I wonder if the built-in messaging app can't function over wifi...?

Might be something to look into, see how native Android devices handle this...

This would be very useful for Boost pay as you go customers running FRX especially new accounts since they upped txt from 10¢ to 20¢.

I would assume you'd still get hit with the text fee, but you wouldn't get hit with the data usage fee (if you have a limited or no data plan).

Even if both users were sending via wifi or one had unlimited and the limited/sans data plan used wifi?

If you're sending/receiving messages, it's going to incur a sent/received message... unless you use Google Voice, and the message is never actually processed by your carrier (or there's some other way to prevent texts from actually hitting the phone?)

I've never tried it but it seems like if you used an app like tikl it would avoid incurring the fee like GV, or am I just talking out of my ass?

Yea, like I said if you had some app that could basically ensure the message was never processed by your carrier, then you won't incur any charges.

To my knowledge, Google Voice would be the only way to do that. Unless there's another app that requires data usage only, and somehow 'catches' messages before they reach the carrier? I don't see how that's possible. The reason Google Voice works at circumventing the carrier is you give people a completely different phone number - so the message is never actually sent to your carrier...

highlandsun 10-25-2011 09:18 PM

The built-in messaging app always uses mobile data for MMS. Most carriers require this, because they're too lazy to do proper authentication. They accept any incoming MMS that's transmitted on their own network.

Thanks arrrghhh & highlandsun, I was just wondering because my wife only runs WM so I need to find something compatible, I'll check a few different app options and update my findings.
